Q: Ipad air low memory crash

I came to this forum to see if other ipad air owners are experiencing same problem with low memory crashing as I do but seems like I'm one of the few people have this. So far I have 10 low memory crash reports. I also have about 30 more crash reports but it's from various apps. I got my ipad air on the launch day, second in line, here in California. Maybe I just have a defective one, I don't know. If you have same issues, please reply so I can determine if I should return it or just live with it. Closing apps every day is a hassle. I wish Apple just put in extra gig of ram. Overall, I am extremely happy with my ipad. There are so many good this things to mention about this ipad but this is wrong thread to do that.

****! Can people please stop posting uneccasry comments? It fills my email inbox worse than spam. You want Apple to really know what is happening? Be sure that "Send diagnostic info to Apple" is enabled in settings. It was a choice when the device was first set up.

If only we could get these Apple "plants" to stop trying to spin this thread.

    Ok you have no problem.

I'll tell you what- everytime someone new posts with a problem, I will immediately post with a list of the people hijacking this thread and put in all caps that THEY HAVE NO PROBLEM, that way all 5 or 6 of you wont have to hijack this thread with your individual posts claiming you have no problem.

Sorry to hear about all the memory problems others are having. I have all 4 of the iPads., just added iPad air. For the most part, the memory is working ok  but it's true it burns more than it should, just add another meg or 2. My biggest issue is my iPads Netflix most of the night  the next day I run my direct tv app and almost into a program and it locks up, a hard reboot is required. Other times my videos and amazon prime as well. I run speed-test right after the it locked up or have to reboot and my speed and bandwidth is no problem. I have found that changing out the routers have a big change in speeds, but I would think, it's hard making all routers work on any os or ox.

This tread is getting very ugly. We came here to help each other, now we are yelling at each other. Name calling and threats have no place in this tread.

I agree.  Over 65 pages now and no closer to a solution than lets keep our fingers crossed on an update.  We have all been through the motions here, replacement units and it is a sad sorry excuse of a company that Apple is that they don't step up to the plate to resolve the problem.  This thread launched shortly after the launch of the iPad Air.  Many of us have purchased the iPad Air with the hope that it would improve our iOS 7 experience as many of us including myself had issues with older iPads and devices once we upgraded to iOS 7.As noted on FixYA Holiday Tablet report 30% of the iPad air issues are Browser crashes.  Believe it or not we all ended up here by either searching iPad Air Crash or iOS 7 crash.  Do people with devices that do not crash search for these things?  If you have no problem I am very happy for you and you are entitled to leave your opinion.  Freedom of Speech.  We all know who are the 1% on here without an iPad Air stating it works fine.  That is the problem.

I agree as well we already have to fight droid trolls on a daily basis. Or at

East I do. We apple fan boys/girls shouldn't be fighting. If anything were in the same apple boat.

For everyone that says there's no problem and they don't experience crashes on their device: I went to the apple store and tried on all the ipad air and ipad mini retina a web page that make safari crash on my ipad air....all the device in the apple store experienced a crash of safari and in the diagnostic I could see a low memory error.

I'm not sure what most of the posters here are calling a "crash"....

    Hi Garypsu,

I have read this Technican Note by Apple (Technical Note TN2151 --- Understanding and Analyzing iOS Application Crash Reports) and it seems to me an article very interesting:

    http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/technotes/tn2151/_index.html

Have a look mainly at the section called "Understanding Low Memory Reports", when it says:

When a low-memory condition is detected, the virtual memory system in iOS relies on the cooperation of applications to release memory.

Low-memory notifications are sent to all running applications and processes as a request to free up memory, hoping to reduce the amount of memory in use.

If memory pressure still exists, the system may terminate background processes to ease memory pressure.

    1) If enough memory can be freed up, your application will continue to run and no crash report will be generated.

    2) If not, your application will be terminated by iOS because there isn't enough memory to satisfy the application's demands,

and a low memory report will be generated and stored on the device.

The format of a low memory report differs from other crash reports in that there are no stack traces for the application threads. Memory usage of each process is reported in terms of number of memory pages, which as of this writing are 4KB each. You will see "(jettisoned)" next to the name of any process terminated by iOS to free up memory.

2--> That's what happens, in my experience, when I have the crashes, usually with applications like Safari, Chrome, or other memory consuming ones. In case of too high memory pressure, they are abruptly terminated by the operating system.  At bottom, it's how IOS Virtual Memory System works, as explained here:

    http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/performance/conceptual/mana gingmemory/articles/aboutmemory.html

    Best regards

    Fabio

PS: It happens to me both with Ipad Air and with my Ipad 1...

Hey all I havent chimed in lately but have some updates.   First off I read the article fabio posted (or reposted) about the crash reports.  My ipad air is generating low memory errors when I only have safari running with no apps running in the background with ever possible feature of my Ipad Air turned off to free up said memory.  Further more I had safari close on me when trying to set my location on craigslist.org which is pretty much as complex as websites were back in the late 90's.

further more I have been dealing with the apple engineers and have been using my ipad while running thier configuration tool that logs all of the processes and actions being performed on the ipad.  What I have noticed is everytime you open or kill an app the log tool records a memory warning (not to be confused with the low memory warning in the diagnostics and usage on the ipad).  I looked it up and asked the engineers what this meant and it means the ipad is using all about about 15% of the available ram.  I am getting these memory warnings whenever you open or close an app as well as searching for stuff in safari.

I was also logging when specific apps crashed, the funny thing is the configuration tool would freeze up whenever an app crashed (photoshop express, starborn wanders, clash of clans, itunes, iphoto, or the pictures app to name a few).   I finally was able to export some of these logs.

The service support staff and engineers have admitted their is a problem, I have a buddy that has the same Ipad air running 7.1b3 and he is still having the same app crashes, safari crashes, and soft reboots and hard reboots.  I should hear more tomorrow when the support lady that I am working with is back to work will keep you posted hope this helps.

    P.S.

To chime in on everything else there are issues with the Ipad product line,  some people can live with these, some people dont even realize they are happening, some people start investigating why things happen, we are a curious bunch.  For most people thier Ipads are the greatest thing since sliced cheese, for others we are pulling our hair out.

Furthermore if you set out to try and push an Ipad or any device or item to its limits it will break.  I cant speak for anyone on here but myself and I did not do that with my ipad I was using it just like i did my Ipad 1, ipad mini, and now Ipad air.  My ipad 1 running iOS5 doesnt have these low memory errors as some other people have pointed out.

thanks so much for the update. I am starting to regret selling my ipad 3 for the air and am hoping that apple can get this figured out.

incidently, I noticed that in my ipod touch 5g with 7.04 I do not have any type of memory errors, and dont recall a safari crash anytime recently.

No, there is no problem with the ipad product line. Please refer to major retailers such as Walmart, bestbuy, target, amazon, and more to read the reviews around the web. A very minor portion of the users are experiencing this problem. There is no " problem with the ipad product line. " This is within normal limits with every new software and or hardware, combined both new hardware with new software, and this is actually very normal.

I am probably going to regret this feeding the troll but here it goes....

    First you_silly_humans,

You have admitted as not owning an IPAD Air.

Also lets put it this way...

Lets look at the Ford Pinto...  For the hundreds of thousands that bought that car they had no problems with it, they would say it was running perfectly...  but for the 10-20 people that lost there lives in it due to a falty fill hose for the fuel tank, it would leak in an accident there was a BIG Problem.  Ford said no it was fine (in actuallity it was cheaper to deal with the law suits than issue a recall)

    Same instance here.

For the vast majority there are no issues with the ipad line, but if you read the reviews on the major retailers there are negative reviews as well as good ones, granted not as many bad as good but they are still there.

if you go to best buy and go to the Ipad Air 64gb silver and look at reviews there are currently 399 reviews, 2 have had 1 star reviews and if you read the comments here

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/ipad-174-air-with-wi-fi-64gb/1780197.p?skuId=1780197 &id=1219063713878#tab=reviews

they are having the same issues...   2 out of 400 is .5% negative.  which isnt bad, but you apply that to 2,000,000 ipad airs sold (granted im totalling all ipad airs not just by storage capacity) and .5% of 2,000,000 is 10,000 units now that is an interesting amount of people having these same issues.  This thread was also mentioned in one of the reviews.  A gentleman had replaced his Ipad air twice in the first 30 days.

So from now on You_silly_humans...  Im going to treat you like a mushroom... keep you in the dark and feed you S#$%!!!!
