Can my iphone 5 (A1428) unlocked (purchased in Canada) be used in Japan (W-CDMA, with b-mobile's Visitor SIM)?
I understand that the LTE bands are incompatible but I wanted to confirm whether I can use b-mobile's 3G (W-CDMA) network for data.

No. It will not work on a W-CDMA network at all. Only on a GSM network.
I can confirm that this indeed does work as I am currently in Tokyo using a B-Mobile data only SIM. I get good 3G coverage, but ony pull down about 1mbps. I spent a while researching this and had a hunch that it would still be able to use 3G because of the band frequency. I have an iPhone 5 on AT&T (A1428) that is IMEI unlocked.

Did you have any isuues inputing the APN settings while you were in Tokyo? Also, what iOS version were you running when this worked?

Not at all. Just follow the steps on the website to enter the APN and good to go. I was just in Tokyo again and had the same SIM card delivered to my hotel this time. No issues at all. Just the same limited down speeds. I'm running 7.1 now and think it was 7.0 the first time (could be mistaken).
Hey there, I am going to Japan in a few weeks and after googling I noticed you had a similar question as I have now? I am taking my US iPhone 5 (unlocked of course) to Japan and I was thinking about using a Bmobile sim. Did that end up working out for you?
will it work if it is 7.1.2? i don't imagine that would be a problem.
