hp scanjet 3800 not detected on mavericks

Hi,
Hope you can help.

I have the latest imac which came with mountain lion installed. As they no longer have a disk drive I dowloaded the relevant software from the HP support website.

The scanner was working fine and then after installing mavericks it has stopped saving my scans.

The image appears in the preview but the saved file is just static with the error -

My mac does not detect the scanner in my device settings, in preview, in image capture or through importing via a device in photoshop- so I have no alternative way of scanning.

I have read feeds that hp have worked to fix the problem for combination printer scanners- has anyone found a solution for the flatbed scanners?

Nina

I would try:

  1. uninstall all the HP software and "utilities" that you have installed.
  2. do a factory reset on the scanner (you'll have to check the manual for how)
  3. go to System Preferences > Printers&Scanners

control click on a printer in the column on the left and select "reset printing system..." and in the dialog that follows, "reset"

  4. open image capture and see if it will see the scanner, download a driver, and work.
If this doesn't work then there probably isn't a compatible driver.

Arthur, I do really thank you profusely- I just tried your tip and it WORKS. Man, I'm so relieved- already saw me working with the jpeg 2000-thingie all the time, but this is not really good for high-res psd-files.

An older driver did work now, one I had years ago, from the hp page, a scan pro driver.

Really thankful for your response- and hope it helps Nina, too!

Thank you, have a great day,

Andrea

You are welcome. Sometimes even the blind squirrel finds a nut.

I have learned to avoid all the applications that printer/scanner manufacturers want me to install on my mac, other than the driver.

I suspect that these manufacturers still don't value their mac customers very much. As such, the mac versions of their software don't get assigned to their best and brightest software engineers. Kind of like with Al Qaeda: they don't assign the brightest guys to be the suicide bombers. Not Rhodes scholars.

The beta of mavericks was released to developers on June 10. HP had from June 10 to October 20 (the public release of Mavericks) to get their software ready, but they didn't. It's like they are trying to drive their customers away. It's amazing to me.

So agree with you- it is an neverending issue that most appliances, sotware, devices seem to be developed to only work 2 years max and then, either quit working entirely or the manufacturer seems to want to force you to buy new. Now, that's not always possible and also not wanted, either.

I, for sure, am not willing to dump a perfectly working scanner only because it is older than 2 years. I managed to get my 4 years old printer work via the Gutenprint website that I detected, so not using the firmware sure is a good workaround in more cases than just this one.

I don't think it makes me- and others- feel attached to a company when I know the only support I get officially is the advice to buy a new printer/scanner/wacom tablet.

All this gave me quite some trouble since I got on Mavericks last week, but thanks to this site and your help today, now I can fully enjoy my new computer!

Thanks again!

Thanks to both of you for responding to my post. I downloaded the 2011 HP software from the website (again!)

But this time it seems to have worked and I managed to save as a jpg2000 and jpg file.

I couldnt work out how to do a factory reset but I uninstalled any existing hp scan software then reinstalled the 2011 software from hp. Icapture, Preview and the printer settings of my macstill dont detect the scanner but hopefully the HP software will keep working.

It has been a pretty unproductive few weeks as a result but thankfully you answered my questions. Hope this helps any other 3800 mavericks users too.

Thanks again!
