WiFi connection dropping packets after upgrade to Mavericks

I upgraded my main machine (17" MBP) to Mavericks the other day and ever since then I'm getting lots of packet loss (more than 30%). Browsing the web became so bad that I started running ping in a terminal window to track how bad the problem is getting. The weird thing is that it seems to go in waves; I'll get lots of pings (20-100) with no problems then a string of 20 or so request timeouts. My WiFi icon always shows a full signal and never waviers.

I can't seem to make it happen and nothing weird shows up in the Console app. I'm not running any extensions or weird programs; mostly just Chrome, iTerm2, Mail, & Sublime Text 3. I tried cleaning out the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration directory like someone metioned in the forums but that didn't help at all.

In order to narrow this down to my Mavericks machine I am running Mocha Ping Lite on my iPad connected to the same Airport Express AP, from the same distance, hitting the same IP address. The iPad rarely has a time out and when it does its just a single packet, which is to be expected really. I also have several other devices (2 Roku boxes, several iPhones/iPads, etc.) that are having no issues at all with the WiFi signal.

Does anyones else have this problem? Any clues as to what I can try? 30% consecutive packet loss is heavily impacting the use of my laptop and driving me a little bit insane.

Thanx!

Richard

I think I've solved the problem, or at least my packet drop rate has gone waaaay down (>10%) so that its not a problem anymore. Here's what I did, YMMV:

1) Remove all the SystemConfiguration files by typing

sudo rm -f Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/*

2) Reboot your machine

It's been 18 hours since I rebooted and my WiFi connection is as strong as ever. The only thing I can think of is that there was a corrupt preferences file that was causing problems.

Later...

Richard
