My ipod goes from the monochrome non-animated version of the battery icon

My ipod goes from the monochrome non-animated version of the battery icon to the apple icon and then it make a whirring sound and goes back to the monochrome non-animated version of the battery icon. I can't get it to connect to my pc at all. Is it the battery?

I’ve had something similar to this happen to me on a 3G. I somehow managed to get it to show up on my PC and reinstalled the software. but it still was messed up. if it doesn’t want to link to your computer, then it might be the hard drive. when you hear the whirring sound, turn your ipod over and listen to the back side. if it abruptly stops or makes another weird sound, then it might be the hard drive gone bad. but it could also be the battery not being able to spin the HD at the correct speed. This might not make too much sense, but the point is that what you have is a long-term thing.

For the amount of information I have read in this forum, monochrome non-animated battery icon appears when iPod's battery is completely drained.

Anyway, I do not understand why iPod's battery do not get enough charge to exit from this state.

In my case, minutes after I connect to USB port and monochrome non-animated battery icon appears, iPod tries to turn on (I can hear that HD's spinning sound too) for about two times but again get discharged and returns to the first state with the monochrome non-animated battery icon in the middle of the screen.

In my opinion, there is a loop effect where iPod get charged a little bit enough to try turning on, but then the battery get discharged for the same try to turn on iPod. Then this continues forever... charging and discharging by itself.

If someone have some workaround about this issue please post it here. I saw so many people get this wrong behavior

Finally, seems to be I found one solution. Reading here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2441110&#2441110 "pac_80" suggested putting iPod in Disk Mode, so that iPod's normal boot do not consume the minimum battery get charged. This really help me to charge my battery while no colored apple icon was coming just Disk Mode Screen. Then 1 hour I found this process let me charge my iPod but do not help me to start normally so I had to restore my entire iPod (losing my music in iPod). Fortunately, I had a backup on my local hard disk. In resume:
1. Go to Disk Mode Only, wait 2 hours until it charges completely
2. Install new iTunes version.
3. Restore entire iPod (format and upgrade)

Same problem - low battery, and clicking sounds - this worked

1 year old ipod 40 gb.
When i noticed the low battery sign, i charged it. Then an apple sign showed up with rhythmic loud clicking sounds. The ipod doesn't respond or play. My computer doesn't recognize it. I can't reset or restore it. Does it just need a new battery or is there anything else wrong?

I swear to God this worked.

From other posts it seems the clicking sound is the telltale sign that the arm which reads the hard drive is out of place - probably because you dropped it or something.

Here is how I fixed it. Smack your Ipod a few times on its right side with your hand. Seriously. Don't hit it that hard, but enough that you can feel stuff move on the inside. Wait a minute and then try to turn it on.

All the other posts have said this is an unfixable thing and to send it to Apple, blah blah. I was astonished that it worked, but given the expensive alternatives, figured it was worth a try.

Mine is working fine right now. Good luck.
