Sound Not Working After Waking with Headphones Plugged In

I plug in my headphones at work but leave them plugged in when I have to leave my work space/go out for food or coffee. When I wake the computer up from sleep, the sound still works. However, when I wake the computer up after physically closing the computer to put it to sleep, the sound doesn't work. I try muting/unmuting or turning up and down the volume but there is no sound, however, the image that indicates my volume levels pops up on the screen.

I have this very same problem, and I see that several others have it too. Retina Macbook Pro late 2013 with Mavericks. This is only a problem when headphones are plugged in and when I close the lid. A reboot will fix it, but this is of course rather annyoing.

There doesn't seem to be any indications whether or not this is a hardware or software-problem, and no permanent fixes have worked for me yet, unfortunately.

Thanks for your reply and since I seem to have the same problem as Shawlery, I'll reply as well.

For me there is no red light in the audio outport, all the controls for sound also show up at the screen. The audio card also shows up in the system report, and a reboot will fix the problem - which personally leads me to believe this is a software issue.

If anyone can shed some light on this, I would be very grateful! 🙂

Had the same frustration of the MacBook Pro refusing to "see" that a head phone jack has been removed - so no sound via the computer's inbuilt speakers. Saw on this and other posts that this problem has something to do with a sensor in the headphone jack port not playing nice. Also noticed red light from port when I removed the head phone jack. Turned to the trusty alcohol swabs. (Always good to have a box of 'em for all sorts of cleaning.) Wrapped a swab tightly around a bamboo satay stick. Gentle insert into the headphone jack, and a twist to have the swab clean out in there. Came out a bit grubby, but more importantly, the sound via the inbuilt speakers came back. Seems it might be no more than a light sensor that gets dirty from grubby jacks being whacked in there. Maybe. Worked for me. Maybe a preventative thing is to try and remember to give the headphone jack a wipe before whacking it in?
