I have not had a problem opening documents from Pages 4.3 in Pages 5. But, the ones I've tried are word processing, some complex & with images, but they do work. It may be that the files you're trying to open are using features that no longer exist. Stick with Pages 4.3 until Apple adds the necessary features back to Pages 5.

In the meantime, leave feedback for the Pages team using the link in the Pages menu and review & rate the new versions in the Mac App Store.

It can be more difficult than that. I have the new Pages with a new machine, and have Pages '08 (3.0.3) - I never updated to Pages '09. Now I can't use my old Pages files unless I use '09.

But '09 is not now available! I have downloaded the old trial, but in 30 days it will expire (the link to buy an enabling code takes you to the new Pages site). I could convert my current working files, but older files I need to refer to and miss, and all my backups, will be read-only in 30 days (and that only while Pages '08 continues to work.)

(Luckily I had upgraded to Numbers'09, and can continue with it until the new Numbers catches up.)

Only Apple!

Who else would have an upgrade that has trouble opening its own documents?

A little off-topic remark here, but Microsoft blocked old Word files in Office 2003. One had to fiddle around in the registry of Windows to re-enable them: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938810/en-us

Yes, I know it was for security purposes, so it is not an exactly parallel case.

I have turned all those "old" Pages files into PDFs, and then using "PDF-to-Pages" (on sale during the Black Friday weekend). I batch converted them back into Pages files, so now I can use them. Why Apple didn't give the new Pages this ability is beyond me. And no, I didn't keep the old Pages because I thought that the new Pages would be an improvement. Was I ever wrong!
