Formatting 10.6.8

Hi

Having just bought a shiny new mac, I have a buyer for my old Mac, and wish to format the hard drive, I have tried restart with command and R, and then with command alt and R, all to no avail.

So I went into the disc utility, selected my hard drive, hit the top erase tab, but all the options below the instructions are all grayed out, the same occurs if I select Macintosh HD, in the left side options.

Any help would be much appreciated.

You need to erase and re-install the OS that was on the machine when new (oviosuly all your data will be erased but I guess you already have that backed up). If it was Snow Leopard, you should have two grey restore disks - one with the OS and one with the iLife apps.

Boot from the OS X disk (disk in drive and restart holding down the 'c' key. The Mac should then slowly boot and you should be able to proceed from there. More info here:
