stereo sound wide

My old mac book used to give a fantasic 3D sound on some tracks, The sound seemed wide and far away from the speakers, This new mac book , Well Almost new, I have been try all sorts. Only to discover the balace is all the the right, and there is sound all centre when control is to the LEFT. Found out reading mac on balance control . Its due to a sub woofer just to the right of the space bar. Wow. i have a sub woofer. is that not meant to only give out the base sounds, What a load off !!!!!

is there any way i can get the wide sound back as i had on my old 2008 MBP. ?
