Why are the satellite photos on the map app so out of date?

The satellite photos on the map app are more than 10 years out of date. Why?

I think things are a little broken. The official google maps app misses my house by about a block on my iPad. So I use a web browser (maps.google.com) Using the iPad Safari browser gets the right location, but the satellite photos are really old - like around 6 or 7 years old. Using a windows environment and either of their browsers, the images are a mixture of about 18 months (satellite) to 3 years (street view).. ironically, better than the ‘official’ google app!

I gave up using the Apple iPad map app, so having just looked, the satellite photos are much more up to date now.

Both the map app and Googlemaps have great difficulty with addresses in rural Cumbria, UK as many houses only have names, and the postcode(zip code) applies to quite large groups of houses.

Google amuses me by telling me that my address does not exist; it has existed in its current form for over 100 years and the oldest part is over 300 years old.

Great modern technology!

I've repeatedly complained about an expressway in my area that has been completed for 2 years. Google maps shows it and correctly gives me directions using the expressway (it is a toll road) - I am disappointed that the best excuse we can get is that the satellite data isn't up to date. If Apple's contracted sources can't keep their data up to date, perhaps it's time to find someone who can. To me, after having heard so many complaints from people so don't even bother to come here looking for help, it's time to move on and fix this instead of keeping a death-grip on something that is not performing up to the otherwise high Apple standard.

Just my $2 worth.

Some of that may be totally out of their power. If the images came from government satellites Apple gets what they choose to release. And I have half a memory of their being a concern about people with ill intent getting up to date images.

Unless Google or whomever pays for the satellite to be up there taking high res images, what they can use is what they are sold/given/allowed to use.

I have a bridge project and the google maps image is at least a year and a half old or more because it shows the new bridge only half completed....it was opened to traffic last december.
