How widespread is the problem?
Only Apple knows that. And it models an approach to openness of communication with customers from the NSA and the Kremlin.

Mar 4, 2014 1:38 PM in response to Eric.by johnniecache,2.05 GB in 1min 35s means 20 MB/s, which is pretty bad for 802.11ac, but its the best Mavericks can do ( i went up to 23 MB/s with my Netgear, still pretty bad)
In Win 8.1 it does constant 45 MB/s, also SMB works much smoother, quick folder display etc. World of a difference.

Well, you made me test again. Just tested three more times, it's now dumping that 2.05 GB in 1 min 15 sec. Eeking out a few more MB/s.
That lower first run was probably because someone in the house was watching something on YouTube while I was testing...doh!
I'm content enough with throughput in my setup at the moment, certainly it's not bad enough for me to want to install and actually use Win 8.1. We have some Win 8 tablets at work -- they were free -- and I find it pretty much unusable. I haven't used SMB in awhile, do use CIFs to a Netapp filer at work. I can't say I've noticed much difference between Mountain Lion and Mavericks. Win 7 though probably does it faster, although I try not to use that unless I have to.

Mar 4, 2014 2:06 PM in response to Eric.by johnniecache,i understand, 25 MB/s is acceptable, but then again we are talking about a MacBook Pro, which should perform in the upper segment of current hardware, no?
SMB is the standard protocol that the Mac will use to access files on a Server/NAS, so if you want to use anything like this, you will have to use SMB.
I like the dual boot quite well, its somehow the best of both worlds. Im not a fan of Win 8.1, but it actually is quite good at some things.

Mar 4, 2014 4:04 PM in response to johnniecacheby Mario Willen,Using Windows to get 45 MB??? Who wants to use Windows....
I'm using a MBPr late 2013, Mavericks 10.9.2.
The average WLAN speed I get is 50 to 60 MB/s, sometimes 70 MB/s, copying files from a Mac mini server.
OK, this is more than the average speed. But i'm using a brand new ASUS RT-AC68U.

Mar 4, 2014 10:12 PM in response to Mario Willenby johnniecache, well, most people here including myself are struggling around 20 MB/s, so an improvement of 150% might be worth some effort.
The Asus Router surely is a good one, but 70 MB/s? How do you measure? On Trustedreviews the absolute maximum was 47,2 MB/s.

Mar 5, 2014 12:48 AM in response to ShaneD90by Marco Raaphorst,I had to change the whole router after Mavericks update tot 10.9.2. But I am getting 62 MB now.

Mar 5, 2014 2:07 AM in response to dannyziaby johnniecache,a simple way would be to open the "Activity Monitor" and go to the Network tab, e.g. "Data received/sec"
P.S. can someone please make a screen capture of those >60 and 70 MB/s on Mavericks?

It could/should be better. In my case, I was dumping files onto the disk in the Time Capsule itself, so if that HD is slow, then it could be a bottleneck. I don't have any other NAS in my home network to test whether it's the TC disk, Mavericks Wifi (ac) or both.
Hopefully Apple will get the ac worked with further driver improvements.

Mar 5, 2014 9:38 AM in response to dannyziaby Mario Willen,I'm using 'menumeters'.
And a very simple test : copying a 4 GB file , it takes about 1 minute.

Mar 5, 2014 11:06 AM in response to Mario Willenby johnniecache,Hm, pretty amazing. I just tested mine again, today i get an average of 10-15 MB/s with SMB to my QNAP NAS. As usual, lots of drops in the transfer speed, not constant at all. I also tested AFP, just out of curiosity, but it is pretty much the same. Also i tested FTP, thats even worse, only 5-10 MB/s.
You are using the BCM43xx 1.0 (6.30.223.154.63) Firmware and 10.9.2?
Please share with us how you are getting such a good connection.

Mar 5, 2014 1:25 PM in response to ShaneD90by Marcel Martens,802.11ac with 80MHz bandwidth is 1300 MBit/s, which means the actual speed is 650 MBit/s.
650MBit x 1024 = 665.600 KBit x 1024 = 681.574.400 Bit / 8 = 85.196.800 Byte / 1024 = 83.200 KByte / 1024 = 81,25 MByte
So if Apple would really support 802.11ac as advertised by them, you should actually get up to 81,25 Megabyte per second. Just a hint for you guys ...

Mar 5, 2014 1:40 PM in response to ShaneD90by Marcel Martens,@Eric.
Let's assume that the internal HDD of the AirPort Time Capsule is connected via USB 2.0 (450MBit/s):
450 MBit x 1024 = 460.800 KBit x 1024 = 471.859.200 Bit / 8 = 58.982.400 Byte / 1024 = 57.600 KByte / 1024 = 56,25 MByte
So do you get up to 56,25 MB/s?
