Q: Ipod Touch 4th gen 6.1.3 can't download podcasts.  Can't download podcasts app.

Just got a new refurbished Ipod 4th gen with IOS 6.1.3.  It works fine.

It can't download podcasts because it doesn't have the podcasts app.

It can't download the podcasts app because you have to have IOS 7 to download the podcasts app.

IOS 6.1.3 is the highest version that the Ipod Touch 4G supports.

Podcasts are the only reason I bought this tiny screen POS.

I received this response from tech support:

"I understand that you would like to download Podcast on your iPod 4th generation. I know how eager you are to use Podcast and I will surely look into it. Please be informed that the Podcast is compatible with iOS7 alone. There is nothing we can do for it. I encourage you to use the iTunes Feedback page to submit your comments."

So there you go.  "There is nothing we can do"

I would argue that a primary function of an iPod is to download and play podcasts.  THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE NOW.

I seriously don't understand why anyone would buy an Apple device with this kind of support.

Go to the App Store on your iPod Touch, go to Podcasts, and tap to download. It should say something to the effect of "the version of this app is incompatible with your iOS, would you like to install the last compatible version?"

    Yeah,

I read that article months ago.  For the Podcasts app, it does not give you the option of downloading an iOS 6.1.3 compatible version.  It only says you must have iOS 7 to download the podcasts app.  As tech support noted, it is impossible to download the podcasts app on an Ipod Touch 4th Generation device.

I have this exact same issue.  I don't use my iPod Touch 4th gen much anymore, but I figured it's a nice piece of technlology that could certainly have a purpose, all my podcasts are weekly podcasts that I listen to on the road during the week (1 hour commute to work) So I figured I'd load my iPod Touch on the weekends and keep it in the car the rest of the week.

However the need for this podcast application that I can't access is keeping me from actually having a use for this thing.  I mean yea, I could just use some other podcasting program, I'm sure something like pocketcast probably exists for the iPod Touch, but I wanted to use the iTunes app.

To the person saying about how the app should give me an option to download a previous version, I understand that's what is supposed to happen, it certainly happened when I tried downloading something else in the past, but for Podcasts it doesn't happen.

Come on Apple!  I understand not being able to get iOS 7, even though the 4th gen iPod Touch isn't THAT old, but don't make it useless, let me go back to a previous version of iOS so it runs smooth again and let me use podcasts again!

The bottom line is that you should be able to download any file to any iPod version FOREVER.  Certainly to one that is still sold in the Apple Store as is the Ipod 4th Gen.  I get there are bugs here and there, but I'm mostly peeved by Apple Support acknowledging the problem, yet not showing or promising a path forward.  This is simply a side effect of apps not being able to access the filesystem and or share files with other apps.  In a real operating system, any app has the possibility of  downloading a podcast, and any app is allowed to play the downloaded podcast.  See: Android and every other OS made.

All of the other podcast apps must keep their downloaded podcasts in their own cache and can't link with iTunes or any other app.  This is unacceptable.

I got it to work on my 4th gen ipod touch, I downloaded the podcasts app in the itunes store on my computer then after it said that it was purchased i went to the itunes store on my ipod and found the app and instead of saying "FREE" it showed the icloud logo then it let me download an older version.

Yes, that seems to be the ticket.  You have to download it to the computer and then you can download it directly on the iPod from app store by clicking on the icloud logo.  Weird that it doesn't work when is says "FREE".  Thank you much!

I am also a 4th generation iPod user who would like to directly download podcasts to my iPod (like my old iPod did).

When you downloaded the Podcast App in the iTunes store on your computer did you download it for IPhone or IPad?  There doesn't seem to be a Podcast App for IPod.  Or at least I can't find it.

If it is not too much trouble please reply back with detailed instructions on where to find the correct app in the iTunes store on my computer because I am elderly and admittedly technically challenged.

I tried the suggestion to download to computer first.  Did not work for me.  Ipod tries to download the app but does not finisth it.  I also tried direct (wired) sync, and I get message that Sync was unable to download or sync one application, which was the podcast app.  From what I can tell, 4th generation ipod touch are no go for pod casts.

The Podcasts App for iOS 7 is universal to iPad and IPhone.  You download that version to your itunes on your computer.  Then you try to download the Podcasts App directly on the iPod by clicking on the cloud icon.  It will then ask you if you want the earlier version of the Podcasts App to download.

When you attempt to download the Podcasts App, does it show a cloud icon or a "free" button?  Please also describe precisely what you mean by "does not finish it".  What precise error does it give?

Your advice worked!  I downloaded to iTunes on my MacBook.  Then on the iPod, went to the App Store and clicked the podcast app, and was given the message you mentioned, and clicked older version and it downloaded and works fine.
