Q: Apple mail does not sync with gMail

Today my Apple Mail no longer provides me with my gMail in the inbox.

I can send mail to my gMail address and it shows in the Sent box ...but it never makes it to my Inbox.

If I log directly into Google Mail the email message is there.

This has always worked before.

Also, just now I downloaded and installed the Apple update for Mail ...which said it fixes some gMail account issues ..but I still have the problem.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I have no issues anymore with Mail gmail after the update 10.9.1.

I must say however that the issues before may have been from the settings in gmail website were not exactly compatible with those in Mail.app.

I tested several alternatives, Airmail is OK, Postbox a bit better even. But here Mail is working correctly now.

Although Mail does work better with Gmail than it originally did under Mavericks, it is no longer my default email client.  I am using Airmail, and think it works as Mail should have.  The design is clean and intuitive and works beautifully with Gmail.  I am tired of spending valuable time just trying to get my email client to work correctly.

Airmail was designed to be a Gmail client, and it shows. However it is not so good with other mail systems, but if you use Gmail who cares about that.

    Hi C,

I have 11 email accounts, of which 6 are pop (partly by choice), and 5 are imap (by choice).

Mail works perfectly for me now.

Impossible for me to switch to an imap only email app.

Mail works perfectly for me as well, even with Gmail.

But I actually only use 2 different accounts, an MS Exchange (for business) and an iCloud (for fun )

I keep active accounts with multiple providers simply for test purposes, Gmail is one of them and it is good enough to be my Spam address, but other than that it's a tester only.

Nothing I have ever used can match MS Exchange for sheer reliability (and trackability)

I thought I was having issues getting mail from gmail after installing Maverick, but my issue was that there was no notification of mail in the inbox.  When I expanded the inbox to show all mail accounts, everything showed up.  It was there all the time.

I read in one of the posts about changing iCloud email alias to @icloud.com, instead of @me.com. Not sure what, if any, impact that had, but since then, all mail has been working great.

GMail is coming in fast, synchronizing and everything is working great.

    Just thought I'd share.

I had this problem too since upgrading to Mavericks two months ago. I read this forum and considered reinstalling Mail but only took action today after getting a hint after someone mentioning "Activity". Upon viewing Activity I noticed that "fetching new mail", "synchronizing with server", communicating with server", etc., seemed to be stuck so I clicked on the stop buttons to discontinue each activity.  After that everything returned to normal.

    Mail now syncs with Gmail.

    Mark,

How do I check this?  When I use Activity Monitor, I can't find "fetching new mail", "synchronizing with server", communicating with server", etc.  I have four things in Activity Monitor that have the word "mail" in them.  They are...

    Mail.app

    com.apple.MailServiceAgen

    Mail Web Content

    Mail Web Content

Not Activity Monitor, Activity in Mail (Window>Activity)

Thanks Csound1.  I don't have anything listed in Mail's Activity window, so I guess that's not my problem.

I'll add my 2 cents worth since I am having a similar problem with variations on the theme.

When I upgraded to Mavericks, the Apple mail worked fine as it has for years. I think that the problem started when I upgraded to 10.9.1. I also use a PC for much of my email (Gmail), but the same Gmail accounts are tied to both the iMac and the PC, so whatever is done on the PC for deletions, additions, subfolders, etc.  is also mirrored on the Mac Mail. On the iMac email account, I have the primary account Inbox for lableled "HH-Gmail". Under this, I have about 50 subfolders into which I move my emails after reading and completing any activity associated with the particular email. So, at any one time, I may only have a few emails in the HH-Gmail box with everything else stored in the specific subfolders.  Normally, I have about 800 emails, only 7 of these in the HH-Gmail inbox, with the rest in the appropriate folders.

When I came back to the iMac a few days ago, I found the following:

All emails were correctly seen amd could be accessed in folders:

    HH-Gmail Inbox/Sent/Trash/All Mail

All of the subfolder contents were gone completely. (This was not the case for the PC, since here, nothing had changed and nothing was lost.)

I have tried most of the remedies suggested in this thread which included a complete uninstall and reinstall of the account with no success. I even tried to send myself an email which could be applied to the specific subfoldeer and has it remained for over 24 hours without being deleted from its subfolder.

One interesting fact is this: one can right click on any folder or go to the menu bar Mail/Window and click on the "Account Info" to see what is in the entire account. If I do this as soon as I open Mail, it shows the complete list of folders and subfolders listing the number of messages and size. In my case, every email shows up in its respective folder and at the end of the list, it shows 800 messages, which is what I should be able to see in the email account. It also shows in MB and GB what is currently in use and the total available.

Now, if I click on one of the subfolders in Mail, which shows all emails deleted, and I watch the Account Info list, that particular subfolder will change from its present number of messages to a zero, which is reflecting what it is seeing in the present Apple Mail account.

Obviously, this shows that nothing has changed as far as the Gmail account, itself, is concerned since everything has stayed constant on the PC AND everything shows correctly on the iMac Account Info listing. Somehow, there is a disconnect between the Apple Mail and the Gmail which cannot be corrected using any of the techniques suggested so far. I am surprised that it takes a fair amount of time for the Account Info to update between the time I click on a specific empty folder and the time it registers zero on the Account Info listing. In fact, it is even more surprising that the Account Info listing requires this action before it will even change to zero. So, the Account Info does not seem to interact even though the Apple Mail has been opened, but not used. Even with the complexity that may exist in finding the problem, I find it difficult to believe that with all of the talent at Apple, so much time has transpired without a fix.

I don't know if any of this will be of help to anyone, but perhaps, it may suggest something to someone.

OK, the love, or lack there of, between GMail and Apple seems to have fallen apart...yet again. Mail app will not update mail unless I select Synchronize all Accounts.

So, I'm trying Postbox. Reviews on it seem good, so I figured I would give it a try.

AirMail seems good to, but they do not have a trial for it. I'm all for purchasing apps, but if I can't get a trial of it, I rarely purchase them. Wish they had a trial for that app.

Anyway, I'll update later on how things go.

    Good luck.

After these problems with Mail and Gmail started, I spent lots of time trying to get them to work.  I got to work directly with an Apple Mail Specialist who really tried, but acknowledged that they do not work as they should.  After 10.9.1, virtually the same problems continued.  Several weeks ago, I stopped trying to get them to work and started using AirMail.  It works great and will allow me to do everything I previously did under Mail except set up rules.  I can do this in Gmail.  I am sure there are lots of other solutions that will work well also, but AirMail is one that I will probably keep using even after Mail starts working again at some point in the future.  Now I can actually get some work done instead of wasting time trying to fix Mail.

As another unhappy customer I will now give up, as Dudley did, and will try AirMail.  I am especially frustrated because I have an iPhone 5s, iPad, and an old MacBook... and Mail runs perfectly on all of them. Only on my iMac running 10.9.1 do have gMail sync problems.  Blahhhh.
