Q: Apple mail does not sync with gMail

Today my Apple Mail no longer provides me with my gMail in the inbox.

I can send mail to my gMail address and it shows in the Sent box ...but it never makes it to my Inbox.

If I log directly into Google Mail the email message is there.

This has always worked before.

Also, just now I downloaded and installed the Apple update for Mail ...which said it fixes some gMail account issues ..but I still have the problem.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I have been having Mavericks Mail.app & Gmail sync problems, like many of you, since shortly after upgrading to Mavericks.

I have 1 Gmail account, plus 2 custom domain Google Apps email accounts.

All accounts connect properly via Connection Doctor in Mail.app, and can send/receive etc. properly.

And all apps do NOT sync mail read/unread status and archived status with both Gmail web interface and iOS mail. iOS accounts sync perfectly with Gmail web.

When I updated to 10.9.2 everything synced properly for a few days, and then it broke again, reverting to the aforementioned pattern.

The only way to get a one-time sync fix was to quit Mail.app and re-launch it.

THIS "BANDAID FIX" JUST WORKED FOR ME:

    - Quit Mail.app

    - Launch System Preferences > Spotlight

    - Uncheck "Mail & Messages"

    - Launch Mail.app

Now (immediately after making that change), for the first time, all my Mavericks Mail.app gmails are syncing perfectly when modified on Gmail web, and on iOS Mail.

Obviously, this has a spotlight search implication, as that functionality is now disabled.

It may have other mail functionality impications that I'm not aware of yet (like searching within Mail.app?).

Has anyone else tried this bandaid solution yet with any reports of enduring success in functionality?

The bandaid fix stopped working for me today (1 day later).

No good news. I uninstalled Apple Mail. I erased all the Mail files. I used Airmail for a week. I then reloaded the entire Mavericks OS and reinintialized Mail. It took a while to synch my 50,000 or so messages. I have only a single gmail account. Worked OK for a while. Now I still have the original problem about Mail being very slow (many minutes) to synch with gmail. Yet I think the problem should be obvious to an Apple Mail software expert if he/she looks at the activity window; there is way too much activity going on during this time that gmail is not synching with Mail.

What is the activity that is going on while Gmail is not syncing?

To see the activity window, press option-command-zero, twice. I'll make a screenshot and post it next time the delay happens to me.

I know where the Activity Window is thanks, and I know that all processes within it are labelled. It would help if you told us what those labels say (you must have read them to know that they weren't Gmail processes)

They are Gmail activities, not sure why there is such a large update for the cache though.

All Mail is a waste of time, unless you like to keep 2 copies of everything turn it off.

My understanding is that prior versions of Mail did duplicate messages when the All Mail folder was enabled, but that this has been fixed. I use All Mail to find messages.

That's your choice but it does double the amount of synchronization needed, and that takes time.

My Apple Mail has not synched with my Gmail account since April 25, although two other email programs work fine on this iMac.  I want Apple Mail's Smart Folder function or else I would just dump Apple Mail for Air Mail.  I have Mavericks 10.9.2 updated today.  Any suggestions?  Oh, how I wish I had never updated to Mavericks.
