Q: Losing network or internet connection after sleep/wake

I've created this as a new thread as it seems to be more prevalent with Mavericks and the very last update to ML but the problem has been around a while. It does seem to affect all types of Mac though from the other threads I have read and posted to.

The problem is essentially this: Intermittently, after a system sleep, the Mac appears to have no network connectivity (local and internet) and for a while the only reliable solution was to force the renewal of the DHCP lease or turning WiFi off and on again, after which the network would be restored.

There have been several theories postulated and a number of fixes, such as the DHCP renew, suggested but none of them have lasted for long but I now think I have this fixed as the following been 100% stable on my Mac Pro with wired ethernet connection for the last two weeks with no recurrences. I see no reason why this would not work on other Macs or connection types.

The problem seems to lie in the automatic location setting in the network settings, so here's what I did...

  1. Network settings - Location - Edit Locations
  2. Add a new location .. "Home" for example
  3. With home selected, click the cogwheel below the network services and choose "Set Service Order"
  4. Reorder the services so your preferred connection type is at the top
  5. After that, select each service in turn (assuming you have a few - like Bluetooth PAN etc)
  6. Make the services you are not using inactive
  7. Apply

Please post a reply if this works for you - it's been dragging on far too long and needs sorting out by Apple but if this is a good workaround for people then it will certainly do for now.

Deleting the SystemConfiguration folder and rebooting fixed the problem for me. I'm wondering if it was caused by setting up the MacBook with the Time Machine backup from my iMac.

This worked for now.  Deleting system configuration also worked for now.  Thanks.  Apple really needs to get on this.

I still feel that it is connected to Maverick since it didn't happen to my new computer until I downloaded the new update.

Now I am shutting down the computer whenever I know I will be away from it for awhile.  When I turn it back on, it connects right away, just like with a restart.  I figured I might as well shut it down because I'll have to restart it anyway.

It's very frustrating on a new machine and I certainly hope someone at Apple reads these forums.  I did send them a bug report also.

    buongiorno,

MacBook Pro + monitor Thunderbolt 27" + wired connection to Router.

I have same problem, exiting from Stop, after update from ML to Mavericks, the MacBook is connected to internet but Safari does not work unless I unplug and then reconnect.

For two days, the problem does not occur after I connected the LAN cable directly to the Mac instead to the Monitor.

I purchased the Monitor in November 2012 and I think that it is very unlikely the Thunderbolt cable is damaged just after the installation of Mavericks.

I'm on the road away from my home office with my MBA. The problem is even worse. In the place I'm staying, the MBA forgets the network every single time after waking up from sleep. What's more, my previous "solution" of going to Network > Wifi > Assist Me > Diagnostics, which worked at home to reconnect, doesn't always work here.

This is a HUGE problem. I hope everyone is submitting feedback to Apple about it using this link.

I'm going to call Apple tomorrow as my MBA is under the 90 day phone support plan (and I just purchased AppleCare). I'm not hopeful given all of the threads on this but it's worth a try.

I've tried deleting system config folder and that seemed to help for a little while, but not for long.

Interestingly enough, my iMac which is in the same home office and also running Mavericks does not have this problem. So it's not as simple as blaming it on Mavericks.

I just called Apple and these are the steps they recommended.

    1. Delete all preferred networks in System Preferences > Network > Advanced.

    If that doesn't work:

    2. Delete System Config folder in /Library/Preferences

    If that doesn't work:

    3. Clear out saved passwords in Keychain Access

    If that doesn't work:

    4. Call back and the next step will involve some Terminal commands.

The guy I spoke to said he hadn't heard of this issue with Mavericks, though he had heard of it with Lion.

So far my Macbook Air is maintaining wireless/internet connectivity after sleep now that I'm back in my home office, but my problem has been intermittent at home so this doesn't mean anything.

And while I was on the road (above), it was terrible as I mentioned.

When you say "Delete System Config folder in /Library/Preferences"

do I move the entire folder to trash, or just the contents of the folder?

    The contents.

FWIW, since I followed these instructions I haven't had another episode of the connection being dropped after waking from sleep. This is a longer stretch without incident, but still too soon to say it's fixed.

Mine is not an issue of the MBP waking from sleep.  Mine is virtually unusable even when it's on, and in active use.  For instance for all I know it will crap out before I have time to click "Add Reply" to this post, so I have to copy and save everything in case I have to repost...  It just simply drops the connection to the internet.  It shows it's connected to wifi, but NO internet and no connection to other wifi devices like my printer. Again, I had an older Cisco router that I thought was the culprit so I updated to a brand new higher end Netgear (R6250) and the problem is even worse.  So this is clearly a router connection issue.

I've tried everything listed here including deleting and re-adding my networks in Preferences, and deleting my config folder, and they both work about as well and about as long as re-setting my wifi.

What concerns me most is is that s_w_i_t_t_e_r_s was told that that Apple is not aware of this problem??? Really?!?  Apple monitors these posts and I wish they would respond with SOMETHING on here.  ****, I'll even gladly spend another $150 on an Apple compatible router if I thought it would fix the problem!

My brand new MacBook Pro with Mavericks was doing this when I first got it; dropping wireless every couple of minutes. What seems to have worked for me was following Reforger's advice about setting up a new Location and then disabling all services except wifi and ethernet (post 1 and 5 of this thread). That immediately reduced the drop outs to once every 20-30 minutes. After taking the computer in to work and connecting to the work network, and then going back home, the drop outs have largely disappeared (now about 1 every 4-5 days). If I switch back to the old default Automatic Location, I still get dropouts, but switch back to the new Home Location cures it.

If you haven't already, try a new Location setting.

PS: when I was still back in the desperate stage, I also found that only connecting to "g" networks also worked. Evrytime I connected via "n" the drop outs kept happening, but switching to "g" on the same router = no droputs.

Thank you so much!!! My rMBP kept slowing down the wifi after waking from the sleep sooooo badly. Your solution works like a charm!

    Home network = Netgear DGDN3300 ADSL modem/router.

Office network = Apple Airport Extreme.

MBP running Mavericks now happy with both routers using the new Location setting.

Old MBP running Snow Leopard doesn't have the problem

Here's a step by step picture tutorial for both solutions on this thread and other ones: http://howtoapple.com/mavericks-wifi-issues-fix/

Refer to the Set Service Order and Delete 'SystemConfiguration' Folder section of the post.

The problem is getting worse and worse and worse as time goes on. I lose the connection 3 and 4 times a day and it isn't WiFi related. A reboot is the only thing that will fix it.
