Q: Losing network or internet connection after sleep/wake

I've created this as a new thread as it seems to be more prevalent with Mavericks and the very last update to ML but the problem has been around a while. It does seem to affect all types of Mac though from the other threads I have read and posted to.

The problem is essentially this: Intermittently, after a system sleep, the Mac appears to have no network connectivity (local and internet) and for a while the only reliable solution was to force the renewal of the DHCP lease or turning WiFi off and on again, after which the network would be restored.

There have been several theories postulated and a number of fixes, such as the DHCP renew, suggested but none of them have lasted for long but I now think I have this fixed as the following been 100% stable on my Mac Pro with wired ethernet connection for the last two weeks with no recurrences. I see no reason why this would not work on other Macs or connection types.

The problem seems to lie in the automatic location setting in the network settings, so here's what I did...

  1. Network settings - Location - Edit Locations
  2. Add a new location .. "Home" for example
  3. With home selected, click the cogwheel below the network services and choose "Set Service Order"
  4. Reorder the services so your preferred connection type is at the top
  5. After that, select each service in turn (assuming you have a few - like Bluetooth PAN etc)
  6. Make the services you are not using inactive
  7. Apply

Please post a reply if this works for you - it's been dragging on far too long and needs sorting out by Apple but if this is a good workaround for people then it will certainly do for now.

… works like charm here, even without a new location. tried all the other hints, nothing worked but turning bluetooth off (late 2011 MBA). so i have to decide, wether wlan or bluetooth. not really cool.

Now that it seems the problem has been isolated, I urge everyone to submit feedback so that Apple knows exactly what's wrong and what causes/fixes the issue.

Here's the feedback I just submitted. Feel free to use/adapt it:

When waking from sleep, my Macbook Air (MBA) frequently loses the connection it previously had to the wireless network it had prior to going to sleep. This happens regardless of where I am: my home, my office, or out on the road.

After a lot of troubleshooting (including many calls to AppleCare support), it has become apparent that the problem involves bluetooth. When I completely turn off bluetooth in System Preferences, my MBA instantly reconnects to the network when waking from sleep, as expected. As soon as I turn bluetooth back on, the problem reappears.

Turning off bluetooth in order to be able to connect to the internet is obviously not a suitable long-term solution, so I am hopeful this will be addressed in a software or firmware update. The recent 10.9.1 update didn't help.

Simply switching off Bluetooth worked for me.  :-)

As I was entering my feedback on the site, with Bluetooth disabled from yesterday, I saw the same issue...."Resolving host" in Chrome. I sent feedback to Apple anyway, this needs to be addressed.

Interesting. For me wifi has connected instantly every time since turning off BT. But it's only been about 6 hours, so maybe it will get worse again.

Anyhow, while I'm traveling I don't really need BT but when I'm at home with my BT mouse and keyboard this is a dealbreaker.

Well, it's been >24 hours now and I've opened and closed my MBA numerous times, and since I've had bluteooth off it has reconnected every time instantly.

Since then I have had no issues, the last drop may have been my internet provider. I will not need my bluetooth until after all the holidays so I will leave it as is and see if this resolves it. Good find in any event.

I turned bluetooth off on my system, and 10 minutes later my network dropped again.  So at least for me, killing bluetooth didn't solve it.

Looks like I spoke too soon. Yesterday I had tons of dropped connections. Actually, this time it was different than before. The problems weren't limited to waking from sleep; the connection would just periodically drop out. Seemed to happen almost like clockwork every few minutes. At first I thought it was the wireless connection where I'm staying (at my wife's parents' house). However, my father-in-law has a Macbook Pro and it wasn't having any issues, and my iPhone didn't have problems either.

This is incredibly frustrating. Has anyone talked to an AppleCare rep that has even acknowledged this as a problem?

Have tried this fix. Worked for a few weeks and is now reoccuring. About time Apple addressed this issue.

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

I have a slightly older MacBook Pro (2010) and have found the WiFi very erratic with Lion and Mavericks. The wireless connection often drops and the Wifi cannot detect any wireless networks, particularly after waking from Sleep mode. Occasionally I get an error message saying "No Wifi hardware installed." Rebooting  fixes the problem temporarily but this is a nuisance. Tried troubleshooting (resetting SMC/PRAM etc) and then upgraded from Lion to Mavericks hoping that would fix the problem. Alas, it hasn't. I am having to use Ethernet quite often. I rarely use Bluetooth so I don't think that can be the source of the problem.

    Some observations using a Netgear 3300 router with an 801.1N wifi connection, MacBook Pro, Bluetooth ON;

    (1) using the default Automatic Network Location

    - no wifi droputs running Snow Leopard,

    - frequent wifi dropuots running Mavericks (approx every 2 mins) and after sleep.

    (2) setting up a NEW Network Location

    - no wifi droputs running Snow Leopard,

    - no wifi dropouts when running Mavericks, occasional wifi loss after sleep

(NB: wifi stability under Mavericks was imediately improved by the new location, but got much, much better after connecting to an external public wifi network)

    (3) 801.1G wifi connection

    - no wifi droputs running Snow Leopard,

    - no wifi dropuots running Mavericks.

(NB: dual channel routers can run separate "N" and "G" connections simultaneously)

    Suggestions;

    - try a New Location

    - take your laptop on an outing to a public or work network

    - consider using a slower "G" wifi connection if the above doesn't help
