Q: Losing network or internet connection after sleep/wake

I've created this as a new thread as it seems to be more prevalent with Mavericks and the very last update to ML but the problem has been around a while. It does seem to affect all types of Mac though from the other threads I have read and posted to.

The problem is essentially this: Intermittently, after a system sleep, the Mac appears to have no network connectivity (local and internet) and for a while the only reliable solution was to force the renewal of the DHCP lease or turning WiFi off and on again, after which the network would be restored.

There have been several theories postulated and a number of fixes, such as the DHCP renew, suggested but none of them have lasted for long but I now think I have this fixed as the following been 100% stable on my Mac Pro with wired ethernet connection for the last two weeks with no recurrences. I see no reason why this would not work on other Macs or connection types.

The problem seems to lie in the automatic location setting in the network settings, so here's what I did...

  1. Network settings - Location - Edit Locations
  2. Add a new location .. "Home" for example
  3. With home selected, click the cogwheel below the network services and choose "Set Service Order"
  4. Reorder the services so your preferred connection type is at the top
  5. After that, select each service in turn (assuming you have a few - like Bluetooth PAN etc)
  6. Make the services you are not using inactive
  7. Apply

Please post a reply if this works for you - it's been dragging on far too long and needs sorting out by Apple but if this is a good workaround for people then it will certainly do for now.

And then I feel kinda stupid realising that I'm just using my iPhones 3G-connection instead of the WiFi. Ahh, well at least I'm connected to the Internet.

And obviously, "last Thursday" was February 20th, but anyway.

    Not my day today!

Does setting your wifi network spec to 801.g make any difference ?

Before I got the new location working, I found that changing my router from 801.n to 801.g stopped the frequent network disconnections.

Local iPhone or iPad hotspot is a good temporary workaround, but keep an eye on your Mobile Data limit from your Telco. It can get costly if automatic updates are switched on.

Nope, going from 801.n to 801.g didn't make a difference - unfortunately. My MBP is still online for approx. 10 minutes, but loses connection to the Internet altough it retains the WiFi-connection to the router. I can then "Turn WiFi Off/Turn WiFi On" which then starts a new approx. 10 minute cycle.

... and yep! An eye has to be kept on the cellular data usage when using "personal hotspot".

Throwing in my troubleshooting process in case anyone else finds it helpful.

Problem has been persistent through Mountain Lion and then Mavericks, all versions including today/yesterday's security update (10.9.2). I've done a thorough and detailed documentation of the problem below:

    Machine:

    MacBook Pro Retina

    15-inch, Early 2013

    2 external monitors

    Settings:

    Set to never hardware sleep

    Display sleep after 15 minutes

    Problem/troubleshooting process:

    1) Upgraded my router in October. Problem begins, but ONLY on this laptop. Noticed upon display sleep for a few hours, wireless drops out and gets ! icon over the wireless. This is at home at my home router. I had to turn my wireless on and off to connect again every time, like many of you.

    2) Cycled through several routers of different brands. Problems persist. Got a crappy older model of a router on sale during Black Friday, with few options for faster newer bands (including 5ghz). Problem is resolved.

    3) Fiance updated my home router AGAIN, with a newer model TPLink with 5ghz enabled. Problem returns.

    4) After updating to 10.9.2 today, noticed wireless didn't connect after the restart when setting up Apple ID, and upon getting back into the OS noticed wireless hanging/dropped again. Turned wireless off and on again to resolve.

    5) Began to monitor my wireless using Wireless Diagnostics constantly for half an hour. The connection is dropped every time I start the monitoring, under 5 min in. I did this 5-6 times.

    6) Called Apple Support. Was told to delete my home network and add again. Problem persists.

    7) Came to this thread. I created a new location and followed the instructions to the letter. Problem persists, connection continues to drop every few minutes.

    8) Followed advice further down the thread. Deleted System Configurations folder, then added the Home location again, then followed all the instructions of the OP again.

Problem now seems to be resolved. No dropped connections for half an hour now of monitoring. Will keep you all updated as I continue to use the laptop normally and observe what happens after normal use and display sleep.

    Hope this helps.

I will apologize in advance for not being computer savy, but I had a similar problem.  My internet connection would drop after reopening my laptop.  I have a Macbook Retina display running OS X 10.9.1 with a Belkin wireless router FD582356-4.  I would run through the network diagnostics as prompted and the connection would restore.

The problem first appeared after Christmas when I upgraded my cable modem (via cable company free deal) to Cisco DPQ3212.  My wife was quick to point out the problems after I supposedly upgraded.

I tried reforger's solution to no avail.  Further internet investigation mentioned something about Bluetooth.  I realized that I had received a Visio TV sound bar for Christmas and had started using the Bluetooth connection to play music from the laptop to the soundbar.

I noticed that if I shutdown the Bluetooth connection to the soundbar before closing the laptop, my problem disappears.  Not sure why, but disconnecting before closing the laptop appears to have eliminated my issue.

Yes creating a new location worked for me. Never had that problem before. It started after updating OS X to 10.9.2.

    Thank you.

Spoke too soon. After a day the same problem appears again. Disconnecting the ethenet cable and reconnecting re-establishes internet access. When connected to the wired LAN I turn off WiFi.

Here is an update. Frome recovery mode, I repaired disc permissions and re-installed Mavericks. The problem persists. I finally decided to replace my 5 month old ASUS RT-N66U router with my old Linksys WRT160n.

This seems to solve the problem, at least for now. Time will tell.

    To restate the case.

I would loose access to the Internet after the second time the MacBook went into sleep mode. Two methods to regain access were possible. 1- disconnect and reconnect the ethernet cable from the MacBook or 2- make the ethernet service inactive and the reactivate. (poosibly a third one from the terminal command line which I did not try). It did not matter if WiFi was also On or Off.

To summarize what I have found so far:

Issue is that wifi drops after wake from sleep, and also that it drops randomly while surfing/idle

Issue is happening on OS Mavericks MBA and MBP (may also exist on Lion and Mountain Lion)

Issue is happening on on wifi (may also exist on ethernet connections)

Issue may be also related to wifi router, but some users have successful connections to other apple products including ipad, ipod, etc and windows laptops

Issue has been reportedly resolved using Reforgers method (post 1 of this thread)  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5537854?start=0&tstart=0

Issue has been reportedly resolved by turning off Bluetooth completely (or by just turning off Bluetooth PAN)

Issue has been reportedly resolved by turning off iCloud services

    Please give apple feedback!

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

100K people have read this and other threads, if all of them leave a quick feedback maybe apple will fix/respond.  Even if a temporary fix works it is not a full solution and apple should push an update

    Thanks!

This worked in my case and it makes sense too. This problem started when I connected my phone via bluetooth as a phone modem. Since then when the bluetooth was on it looks for the phone first after waking and would never get to the wifi connection. Turning the wifi off/on was the only way to get the wifi to connect.

This solved the problem. Nice work!

My issue started when I used the apple bluetooth mouse. I am unable to connect to wifi after sleep/reboot. Only way to resolve it is to off/on wifi. I have set the "Service Order" for wifi to be the first one (as its currently set second only from Bluetooth PAN). I have made "Thunderbolt Bridge" as Inactive and deleted "Bluetooth PAN" as I only use usb cable when using my phone as modem. So far I have restarted my computer twice and manually set it to sleep and no issue so far with my wifi and apple mouse. I will post here if I encounter further issues.

I have been following this thread for awhile and we are creating confusion for every new person that reads this thread.  When they go to the last pages, to get the latest info they just see a lot of confusing info.  They are seeing alot of suggested fixes, trying them and they dont work, or they do work, but there are so many suggestions that no one knows what to try.  So I have a proposal. Lets do this right.  Copy and paste this post.  If you try one of the suggestions and it works for you, bump up the "success count", if it doesn’t bump up the failure count.  Because when multiple people have something working we can have confidence it should work for us.

    Problem:

Since upgrading to Mavericks whenever my MacBook goes to sleep (if I leave it idle or if I close the lid) the wifi disconnects and it can take up to a minute to reconnect when it wakes. When searching the web you get the message “Not connected to the internet”

    Why it happens:

Wifi and Bluetooth conflict with each other when the computer wakes.  If a bluetooth device was paired, and was disconnected while the mac was sleeping, the mac will first look to repair that device.  Since the device does not allow the mac to pair, the mac continues to search for it for up to 1 minute and then will timeout and allow the wifi to ocnnect.

    How to test it:

Close the lid of your mac to let it sleep, open it and login, does it take 0-5 seconds to connect Wifi (Wifi icon becomes solid black and can surf the web) if so you are good.  Else if wifi icon is gray or shows searching and you cannot surf the web for 30s to 1 minute or until you select your wifi network you have the problem.

Potential ways to get around this (Please add to success/fail count as you test! )

    1) EASY - Turn off Bluetooth (Top Right corner menu bar Bluetooth Icon > Turn Bluetooth Off, icon will become gray)

Test it works: Turn bluetooth off, close lid, open, and surf web

Disadvantage: Obviously you cannot use bluetooth.

    Success Count: 100+

    Fail Count: 0

    2) MEDIUM - Delete the plist and reboot your mac (Open finder, select ‘Go’ at top menu bar, ‘Go to folder’ > Library/Preferences, delete this folder if you have it: SystemConfiguration (if you have it) and this file: com.apple.systempreferences.plist (More info https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4301)

Test it works: Turn Bluetooth on, close lid, open, and surf web

Disadvantage: Issue returns if after doing this fix, you disconnect a Bluetooth device while the mac is sleeping.

    Success Count: 1

    Fail Count: 0

    2) EASY – If you have unpaired a Bluetooth device while mac was sleeping, repair that device.  Unpair it while mac is awake.

Test it works: Turn Bluetooth on, close lid, open, and surf web

Disadvantage: You must have the device available of course

    Success Count: 1

    Fail Count: 0

    3) EASY - Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer (Top Right corner menu bar Bluetooth Icon) > Open Bluetooth Preferences > Advanced > Uncheck Bluetooth devices to wake this computer

Test it works: Turn Bluetooth on, close lid, open, and surf web

    Disadvantage:

    Success Count: 0

    Fail Count: 1

    4) EASY - Disconnect all bluetooth devices (Top Right corner menu bar Bluetooth Icon) > Open Bluetooth Preferences > Remove all connected devices

Test it works: Turn Bluetooth on, close lid, open, and surf web

    Disadvantage:

    Success Count: 0

    Fail Count: 1
