I periodically receive a message on my iPhone 4s that iCloud has not been backed up in x weeks. When I attempt to back up manually, it cannot be completed and last backup date is unavailable.

What happens if you click Backup Now ?
Sorry, I put all this in my initial post--not sure why it didn't show up. When I backup now, I get a message that the backup cannot be completed. Last Backup: Unknown
You need to be on wifi when you do click Backup Now. Are you?
yes, confirmed that I was actually connected to wifi and tried again twice; both times "the last backup could not be completed".
