Use the .settings app.
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar > tap on the account to be deleted > when the account info comes up swipe to see the very bottom of the account window > tap on delete account.

no. this isn't working. i don't see any such option. actually this account is my office mail account and registered using airwatch.
i think this deletion won't work with email accounts registered by airwatch.
You can also delete accounts using the contacts app.
could you please elaborate this?
Not sure how you would delete an email account through the conctacts app.
Have you tried AirWwatch support?

What exactly do you not see? The delete button?
Are you using the default Mail App or one installed by AirWatch?
If you are using the Mail App what do you see under Settings->Mail, Contacts & Calendars->Accounts?
Are toy trying to delete a person or a company so you can no longer sent mail through them?
i don't see delete buttion. i could see delete buttion for the gmail which i configured for default mail app on ipad. actually airwatch is used for initial registration only and then mails are configured by default mail app in ipad.
under accounts i could see different accounts such as gmail, my office account. when i select office account there is no option to delete, where as i could see delete option for gmail acccount.
i am trying to delete email account which i registered in my ipad. i am not longer associated with that company and not receiving email from it. but it still shows in my default email app which i want to delete account from it.
I think you are probably going to have to restore your iPad to get rid of the Airwatch profile.
Other than that, maybe the guys over at the Airwatch support page can help you remove it.
Technically speaking your company should have removed Airwatch from your device upon departure.
Is there an Airwatch icon you can delete? Maybe it's time for a trip to the Apple store.
Look in General->Profiles and see if there is a profile from your old company (used to set up email, CalDav, etc.)
When I deleted this, it took out the Mail and Calendar accounts that it had created. That is the reason there is no delete icon.

THANKS SO MUCH!!! THIS WORKED FOR ME!!!
In order to change - not delete - the email account your iPad is registered to! you must go into your iTunes account and change the email for your account. This allows you to keep anything purchased under the Apple ID you have used.

I had a similar issue, which many companies now require network profiles as a security provision. If you have to install anything to access company resources it is highly likely the company profile on your system is preventing deleting the account. In that case go into Settings ---> General ---> Profile and revoke any certs associated to your old company. It will remove the accounts (and any software that they installed that you couldn't delete) automatically.
Just noticed Mark's reply I should have just said ditto
