Problems with external USB 3 RAID drives unmounting

Problem

My 6 TB external RAID enclosure unmounts every time I try to copy large amounts of files onto it (for example, if I use it as a Time Machine backup)

iMac specs

  • 27 inch iMac (late 2013 model)
  • 3.5 Ghz CPU (i7)
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 3 TB internal Fusion drive
  • OS 10.9 Mavericks
  • All software updates installed

RAID enclsoure

  • External USB 3 drive (direct connect to iMac)
  • Externally powered
  • RAID 0
  • Uses matching 3TB Seagate baracuda drives
  • 6 TB total

The drive mounts, formats, and works fine until I need to copy files over to it. If I use Time Machine, or simply copy lots of files (ie, my iTunes library, or various video projects), then it suddenly unmounts and I get the "Disk Not Ejected Properly" error. The drive then immediately re-mounts by itself.

What I've tried

  • I tried (2) different RAID enclosures
    • both brand new
    • different brands
  • I tried different USB cables
  • I tried different USB ports
  • I tried it with all other USB devices unplugged
  • I verified that both RAID enclosures work fine with any USB 2.0 device
  • I verified that both RAID enclosures work fine with my Wndows 7 laptop
  • I cleared my SMC
  • I cleared my NVRAM
  • I cleared by PRAM

I wonder if this is some kind of weird power issue? I am convinced that there's nothing wrong with the external drive or enclosure because I've tied TWO of them and they both fail the same way, and they also work just fine on any USB 2.0 connection, and on Windows.

Unfortunately Apple tech support wasn't able to provide an answer and told me to take it into a retail store. I suspect this isn't related to my individual imac, but to the line in general.

Advice? Help?

I know your pain. I have the same issues with Mavericks. Apples implementation of USB 3 is a total disaster.

I am unable to use my enclosure at all. I am somwhat lucky. I have a firwire boar that allows me to remove the

usb 3 board and install firewire 800. Much slower thatn USB 3. But it is rock solid.

One more thing I would like to mention. Beware of using Time Machine on the usb 3 ports.

It has corrupted every drive I have tried. All my drives are 4 tb WD Black.

My Imac config, Late 2013, 32 gig ram, 4gig video card, 1tb flash drive.

I Have done every thing you have listed above and more with out any success.

I would love to find a solution.

FYI: I was able to successfully transfer files using my wife's rMBP using USB 3.0. She is running 10.8.5.

This if further proof that my original post above is accurate: Mavericks + USB 3.0 on iMac (late 2013) = broken. 😟

Apple tech support twice suggested I take my iMac into a retail store. They also suggested I restore to a brand new fresh installation of Mavericks and try again. (I did the migration assistant, and do not have a way to backup all my data anymore)

Apple? Anybody? Help?

Just a little more insight. I have a late 2012 rMBP bought it in Aug 13. Loaded 512 gig flash drive, 16 gig ram, Running Mavericks fully updated. It runs my 5 bay usb three external drive with out issues. It mounts, ejects copies, etc without any issues. It will run 24/7 for days with out any issues from the external drives. Important point the 5 bay enclosure is not raided. It is JBOD.

I have installed and reinstalled a clean install on my Late 2013 Imac and it still the same.

USB 3 on late 2013 imac is a disaster plain and simple.

Apple need to get this at least looked. Tim Cook is too busy playing politician.

HELP

More tests:

  • Configured my enclosure to use the drives as RAID-0.... fail
  • Configured my enclosure to use the drives as RAID-1.... fail
  • Configured my enclosure to use the drives as JBOD.... fail
  • Configured my enclosure to use the drives as stand-along, individual drives.... fail

All failures match the original problem description at the top of this discussion thread.

Yes fails every single time.

I wrote some info when I first got my Imac. Apple support called me and wanted a capture off my machine.

but I never heard back from them on what the problem was.

It is a mess.

The solution I came up with was to connect my external drive to the spare USB port on my Apple keyboard. This limits the USB speed to USB 1 or 2, so it's very slow, but at least it's stable. THis allows me to use TIme Machine, so at least I have a backup.

But until Apple fixes the USB 3.0 issue, I can forget about using it for the high speeds I bought it for.

Another suggestion I read about, but have not tried, is to get an externally powered USB 3.0 switch. Somebody else on another forum suggested that it might help. I'm not going to do that, but if anybody else reading this wants to try, please let us know.

Posted on another thread:

I have completely given up on USB3 hubs. They are very unreliable, even with cables shorter than 2 ft.

I only directly connect USB3 devices (drives) directly to my 2012 iMac now, with short good-quality USB3 cables.

Note: I got several cables from Amazon, all same length 0.5m, and tested them. There was a 20% difference in disk data speed between slowest and fastest. I kept the fast one and sent the others back.

I was also told that my wireless 2.4 GHz mouse (not bluetooth) would interfere with the hubs. It did.

If you ask me, USB3 is a crappy but fast hack.

Problem solved:

I bought my iMac a a week ago, updated to mavericks rite away, then hooked my external 4 bay drive, started to transfer large files, my drive disconnected and connected rite back every time. I did every thing possible to fix this issue but no luck, called apple as usual told me to take it to apple store, but I thought before I take it in ill try to install older version of OS.

I Downloaded mountain lion, loaded to usb stick, formatted the drive and fresh installed to OS 10.5 and problem was solved, now that the disconnecting problem is solved, I noticed that the transfer rates has been slowed down a bit, and black magic is also showing me about 20Mbs slower then it was on mavericks ????? Humm

I think mavericks is throwing more power to the USB 3 ports then it should, more power means faster transfer rates therefor disconnecting the drives. IDK I'm no expert but bottom line is the issue has been solved and it's disappointing how apple is pushing them selves in the gutter with windows OS, the whole point of switching to mac was to use something stable and not to waste our times with fixing the issues, I have wasted an entire week on this and the best part is, I bought a maxed out iMac/ top of the line.

Any ways hope this helps you guys and apple should be a shamed of them selves and free OS doesn't mean you start making crap
