Q: How to fix Home Sharing with new iOS 7 upgrade

I have exact the same problem as Inail. I have tried many other solutions, but these only work for a few days maximum.

Today I installed the new iTunes version and homesharing stopped working altogether, despite resetting ATV, restarting iTunes, PRAM reset iMac, ... :(

Frankly, I think I am going to give up on homesharing as I think it will never work for me.

UPDATE:

I recently purchased a couple of new iPads and a new Airport Extreme.  Since I have installed the Airport Extreme in my home, I have not had one single issue of Home Sharing not working... NOT ONE.  So with that said, Winston is apparently correct in that it is in the network. BUT along with that, this also means that apparently Apple is no longer playing nice with 95% of the wireless routers in peoples homes.

Thankfully, my issue of Home Sharing not working is resolved.  Even though I dislike recommending anyone's product to simply resolve an issue, I do have to say that I have always liked Airport and they have always been extremely dependable.  My last one was fried after a lightning storm, so I suffered with a Belkin router for a year until I could afford to purchase another.

My setup:

Motorola cable modem > Airport Extreme

2009 iMac > connected wirelessly > Home Sharing

Apple TV is only device that is hard-wired to Airport.  All other devices, i.e. iPads and Macbook Pro's, are wireless.

been using home sharing for audio for years - ipods, iphones playing all over the house

started having trouble a week or so ago

tried updating itunes on PC

reboot router (its supplied by phone company and my only way to connect to internet and I have no idea how to upgrade its software

reboot everything, renew lease, restart Bonjour - Nada!

In itunes turn home share off, back on, check the preferences - nothing connected.

just got new ipad mini and new iphone 5S - they are not seeing my library to share most of the time.

Home sharing has occasionally re-appeared, but when I close itunes on my PC, all my devices cannot see the library when I reopen.

Any new fixes?

Apple are you listening?

I'd been having this issue for a while, give this a try:

1. Go to Control Panel and open Windows Firewall.

2. Then click on "Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall"

3. Look for the "Bonjour Service" (I had two entries as I have two networks), and make sure both "Home/Work (Private)" and "Public" are checked. If not, click "Change Settings" and check both boxes, then hit OK.

4. From Start (or Manage computer, however you prefer) launch Services, and stop the Bonjour service

5. Stop iTunes

6. Start Bonjour service

7. Start iTunes; make sure Home Sharing is turned on.

It appears to me that the install of the newer iTunes isn't setting this correctly (last couple of versions).I spent way more days trying to figure this out than I'd like to admit. If this also fixes it for you go to http://www.apple.com/feedback/ and submit this to them as iTunes feedback so they fix it.

Many Thanks for this advice which worked for me as well. As I had been caught by the latest iTunes update on WIN7 which conveniently crashed iTunes with the .dll missing messages I had suspected that was also the cause of this new glitch (incidentally I fixed the oriiginal post-update crash with the expert help of others on this forum).

Thanks again - very much - I am just about to finish a massive upload to iTunes specifically to take advantage of homesharing via iPad and was beginning to despair of Apple !

One question, Zeusal - just for information, why does the "public" box need to be checked against Bonjour when all the sharing is within the home/private network ? Does this expose the network to any external risk ?

The first time the Windows 7 system was connected to the network it asked you to choose the network type. If you chose "home/work" as your type then *may* not even need to have public checked. I believe the "public" setting would be if you want the service to be accessible from a subnet other than the one your computer is immediately on. For most home users they have a WiFi router/firewall in place on their network so they likely chose "home/work". Why the Home Sharing doesn't work for the Home network when Public is checked on the firewall allow list is not clear to me. One would think if you were fine with allowing the service on "public" that "home" would be fine.

Well, Winston Churchill, what I find unreasonable are contributions like "I find it somewhat unreasonable to hold Apple responsible for something that is entirely out of their control, but clearly you think that's OK."  There are threads on this problem all over the place.  Why do you have to insist that Apple can't have a problem that needs solving here, adding passive-aggressive ad hominem insults?  That adds nothing to the conversation.

This happens periodically with my setup also, where literally every piece of hardware in the problem is Apple, and the network is WIRED.  So... try again.

FWIW, on my setup this is primarily an issue when the server end of the share has gone to sleep and needs to wake up.  The ATV seems to time out waiting for that to happen and once the server has automatically awakened, it fails to make a clean check for the connection until the ATV is reset and continues to report an error. That's a bug.

I too am driven crazy with Home Sharing problems. Here's my setup:

- 2 Macs (iMac and a Mac Mini), both on Mavericks

- 2 Airport Extremes

- One iPhone, one iPad

Essentially none of the iOS devices will connect to either of the Macs via Home Sharing. They will see that there are libraries available, but when I go to connect to them they will produce a circle icon that fills up about a third and then just... nothing. Happens in both libraries for both music and video. Very annoying as I used to use Home Sharing all the time.

Similar problem here .... iTunes on Win7 laptop shared with iPad and previously working. Now the circle icon for my library gets to half way and then ...nothing. I have NOT upgraded to lateste version of iTunes after the previous upgrade disaster documented in this thread and elsewhere. Was about to invest in a Bose soundlink ....but no point if Apple can't fix these sharing issues.

Further to previous - I have now updated to latest version iTunes (without problem this time) but still no visibility of shared library on iPad (IOS7) other than a stuck at half distance circle icon. Admittedly I do have a library with more than 9500 tunes but assume it doesn't take an abnormally long time  to become

visible and shared ?

Have closed or stopped and restarted everything on both laptop and iPad, including Bonjour service, numerous times.

Frustrated as it was working before.

Got it working.....for the moment at least ...by simply closing every other app that was open on the iPad ...but maybe that was just coincidence.................

Like you all, I, too, am experiencing this same issue. I've been reading some of you guys' home remedies. Unfortunately I don't have a fix but I have some of my own home remedies to help aid the process.

I find that if any of your iOS devices can't find the home sharing server then bring up your control centre and turn on Airplane mode, wait a few seconds and turn it off. This is basically the same thing as releasing and renewing your IP address, just a little faster.

As for the AppleTV. I have a non-jail broken ATV2 and a 2013 MacMini that are both hardwired in to our router. Even with the Mini running iTunes and is awake and open… the ATV2 has trouble finding the home sharing server sometimes. For this I find that you can try and release/renew your Mac but all I do is close iTunes and reopen it. This usually fixes the issue until the next time.

If those two things don't end up fixing my home sharing issue I power cycle my wireless router (Linksys) and then might have to repeat the same processes over again. It's just such an inconvenience as this system used to work almost flawlessly.

I'll try some of these other fixes and swap out our Linksys for an AirPort Extreme that I still have at my parent's place.

Anyone else have any other concrete-ish fixes? 

I have all apple products....2011 imac, 2012 macmini both on newest mavericks(updated) 2 ipad mini's, ipad 2, atv2, iphone 5 and iphone 5s all updated and airport extreme and airport express all updated and not one combination of any suggestion here or from the web will make it work.  I left microsoft for this very reason and now experiencing the same crap from apple...release crap and see who has trouble then fix if we feel like it.  Absolute crap i tell ya.
