Exchange server locks me out with bad credentials

I'm the only Mac user that is connecting to my company's email through the Exchange server. All was well until I updated to Mavericks. Now I am locked out of the exchange server every 30 minutes or so with the error "Unknown user name or bad password."

This happens whether I use Outlook for Mac 2011 or Mac Mail. It also happens when trying to connect to servers.

When my account is unlocked, using the exact same user name and password results in a connection so I don't have the wrong credentials.

Is anyone else having this issue?

Here's what I've tried:

  1. Deleting all accounts in Outlook.
  2. Deleting all accounts in Mail.
  3. Deleting all certificates in keychain
  4. Deleting network preferences
  5. starting with a new user on my mac but same exchange user
  6. starting with new exchange user

I've googled and haven't found similar problems. Any suggestions?

My problems continue (similar to what ddangle reports) as well.

I deleted all accounts from Outlook for Mac 2011, then after adding my account and letting it rebuild itself, I seemed to run for several weeks without getting locked out. But then I was locked out again today in the same way.

What is really odd is that this almost always happens on Saturday morning. I have no idea why.

When I get in this state, my administrator can see that something continues to send a stream of bad password attempts to the Exchange server. It is as if a rogue process just starts sending bad login attempts to the Exchange server. I need to reboot the MacBook to get this to stop, I believe. More debugging is necessary, but it is difficult to do because it only gets in this state occasionally.

But again, I ran Outlook for Mac 2011 for a couple of years without ever seeing this. I've only seen it since doing the Mavericks upgrade.

I'm having a similar problem. Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks, I am getting locked out of the Exchange server due to bad password attempts at least once a week. Strangely, it seems to happen every Saturday, but has also happened a few times during the week. From what the administrator can tell, everything is running fine for a while, then my account starts receiving a sequence of logins with bad password attempts and that eventually locks me out of Exchange.

This has worked perfectly for years... just started after upgrading to Mavericks.

Help appreciated!

I am suddenly having the exact same problem. My administrator told me the same thing. Exchange reported:

Nov 27 09:26:42 MSWinEventLog 5 Security 494 Wed Nov 27 09:26:41 2013 4740 Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing N/A Audit Success 13824 A user account was locked out.

Additional Information:

Caller Computer Name: MacBook-Pro.local

My MBP is the only computer on the network with Mavericks. I too login with my same credentials and then it works just fine. I use Apple's Mail, Calendar, Notebook, and Reminders. No MS Outlook.

This needs to be addressed.

I might have found a fix for this, at least in my case, thanks to some smart folks over on JAMFnation (see post and link below).

Even though I do all mail, calendars and contacts through Outlook, there was an Exchange entry at System Preferences -> Internet Accounts that was trying to sync Contacts. It seems logical that this was trying to log in with a bad password and causing the lockout. So I removed it and I'll see if that takes care of the problem.

I had this issue on a user's account as well. I was troubleshooting Outlook with no success. The issue turned out to be incorrect credentials stored in an exchange account entry on the user's home computer under System Preferences -> Internet Accounts. The OS just kept attempting to access that account without ever popping up any errors. The user's account would lock out several times a day.

bigair - are you by chance syncing your mail to iCloud from your phone (assuming you have an iPhone)?

I had this same problem that started after I upgraded to Mavericks. I turned off the email sync through iCloud on my iPhone hoping that would fix the problem but it didn't. Then I deleted the Exchange account under internet accounts. Maybe you need to do both? At any rate, it appears to have worked. I haven't been locked out for 2 straight days. That's the longest I've gone since upgrading to Mavericks.
