How do I unpair my apple remote from my MacBook Pro?

I have tried everything to unpair my apple remote (which came with my apple tv) from my macbook pro. I have a mid-2012 15 inch macbook pro, running Mavericks, which does not have the option to disable the IR function. I know every forum says it is located under System Preferences>Security and Privacy>General>Advanced. And yes I have unlocked the lock at the bottom left to allow me to make admin changes. I have even tried downloading a third party app called Candelair, which installed, but then when I tried to launch it from system prefs, it is mentioning I need to update the driver. I click update, and absolutely nothing happens. This should be SO EASY to fix. I am not sure what the problem is. If anyone has a solution, I will be forever grateful.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9), 15 inch
