Q: Blank gray screen

I am the owner and creator of an Itunes U class.  When a student downloads my materials (pdf) the screen display a blank gray screen with the title of the file, nothing else.  What is going on?  It seems to be doing this on all files over 100 mb, but I didnt think file size was supposed to be an issue.  Below is the image displayed on the iPad screen.
