I notice the spinning wheel in the lower-left corner.
Is this "Desktop" folder on a network?
Nope. Not on the network, it is my desktop. I see the beachball spinning occasionally too. 😟
Can you "Get Info" on the Desktop?
Next time this happenes I will check "Get info"
What I have been doing it selecting another folder then going back to the desktop. THen files are displayed
I have "Repaired permissions" on the disk without any change.
I guess I'll download Onyx and see if that fixes things....
I have the exact same problem, with the exact smae setup of macbook and OSX.
I reckon its a bug.
Apple fix this.
I was really hoping 10.9.1 would fix things.... No luck.
I see 10.9.2 is in beta, my fingers are crossed!

SUCCESS!
(at least apparent, temporary success...)
Here is what worked for me:
1) Open Finder and navigate to this location:
HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration
2) Find the file named preferences.plist
3) Rename the file to preferences.plist.old (this preserves the data in case you need to restore the file for some reason)
4) Your system will then rebuild the preferences.plist file (not sure whether that happenes immediately or upon rebooting).
Let me know if this worked for you. This instantly solved my problem with Finder and Open/Save dialogs displaying files slowly, and I'll keep an alias to that location on my desktop so I can repeat the process if the slow behavior reappears. Hopefully Apple will fix whatever is causing this problem with preferences.plist.
Have a great day!
YES!!!!!
That worked for me too!!!!! I am so happy Thanks!
It even made the preview work fast. When I press the space bar to preview an image it now open immeatily. No waiting!
Thanks again!
Monty
Nuts. After a couple of days things are back to the slow frustrating waiting and waiting....
