This Solved My Problem too!!!
Thanks....
But can you explain why did we have change these settings?
It also solved my problem.
Thanks
I tried changing the DNS but it didn't work for me... what else can I do?
Thank you Caralyn. It works great after pulling my hai out for days.
Adding my two bobs worth to this. My husband and I each have an ipad, his Version II mine IV, and, suddenly, his came up with the message: "Safari cannot open because cannot find server". When I compared the two IPads, the only differences I could find were (1) ITunes sync did not have our PC name, but another strange, unknown name;
(2) the Wifi address on mine, the correct one, was 38: OF: etc , and his was 04:54 etc.
Although I tried using our Telstra account, and not WiFi, (after clearing history and switching off), this didn't help. The only remedy I found on the web was to reboot- pressing Home and Sleep Button together until the apple Logo appeared. Warning: I was advised to turn off running apps first, but could not follow the directions.
PS I cannot find System Preferences on his Ipad. Can anyone tell me where they are for future reference? Thanks
So happy to find this (the DNS fix). It seems to have worked for me. Thank you, Carolyn! How would anyone know this stuff?
Carolyn, you're amazing! I've been so frustrated about this when it cropped up suddenly these last few days. Oddly, it was also happening in Chrome and Firefox, so I knew it wasn't just a Safari thing. I'm not sure what threw it off, but thank you so much for the fix!
I hope this works for me. Thanks! Is there any advantage of inputting the same DNS servers straight to your WiFi router (in my case an Airport Extreme) versus inputting it on your laptop network settings?
The two DNS server addresses that Carolyn mentioned belong to opendns, a DNS service company. Their service is pretty good.
Fortysixer, I'm using an iPad too and Carolyn's suggestion worked for me. To use the DNS codes she lists, tap your iPad "Settings" icon and then "Wi-Fi" on the lefthand toolbar. Then tap on the name of the Wi-Fi network you're currently using. That will display the network's information, including the DNS number. Tap the box that includes the current DNS number and then type one of the numbers Carolyn suggested. I entered 208.67.222.222 as my DNS and haven't seen that annoying "Safari can't find the server" message since.
This solved my problem on the MacBook, but I have the same issue on my iPhone 5, iPad 2 and iPad mini. "Can't find server" "No internet connection" when I actually DO HAVE internet connection. Software is up to date on all of these devices. Yet, I can't download or update any apps. Also on Safari some pages won't open (like I said, I get "Can't find server" / "No internet connection" messages, especially when trying to go to an external link from Twitter or Facebook apps. I tried resetting my network settings on my devices. Nothing works. I'm really frustrated. But at least, Safari on my MacBook works now. Thank you!
