Mounting digital camera

Try using a Compact Flash card reader that interfaces thru your USB port. Here's one from SanDisk for $20

The CF card mounts like another disk and you'll be able to manage files on the card from the Finder

According the the specs for your camera, it does not support USB "Mass Storage" mode. In order to show up on the Finder's Desktop, a camera must support this standard. Your camera utilizes another standard called "PTP" which allows it to be accessed via programs like iPhoto or Image Capture but not in the Finder.

If you don't want to use iPhoto, use Image Capture which is in your Applications folder. Within that application's preference panel you can change the program that launches when your camera is connected. If you prefer Image Capture after trying it, change the preferences such that it launches on camera connect.

I don't think Canon digital cameras mount that way in OS X. Other digital camera brands do, so I think it must be a Canon driver issue-a quick search here on the forums shows that you are not alone in this.

You can try using the Image Capture app that Apple provides instead to access your pictures.

For what it's worth, and in case anyone's finding the same problem, this also applies to the Canon Ixus range cameras. I know it's unbelieveable that there should be this incompatibility, but there you are. You're very bold to suggest that there's some disadvantage to Mac ownership, but you're right, just as the Emperor truly had no clothes on!

Interesting. I guess Windows can mount a PTP camera in Windows Explorer. I didn't know that.

In Mac OS X, PTP-only cameras don't mount in the Finder. That I know.
