Are any scanners working with Mavericks? Am I the only person who believes that scanning has become an essential service of any current OS?

It's been a while now since Mavericks was released in the wild. The same afternoon I upgraded I attempted to do something which has become more routine than printing - scanning. But when I went to find my scanning software, there was nothing there. A reinstall of the latest drivers for my all-in-one printer/scanner did not fix the problem - still no scanner. A search of the manufacturer's web site for drivers to work with Mavericks found nothing.

At first I assumed it was just my "not os ordinary" printer/scanner but my wife's very ordinary printer/scanner was the same - neither manufacturer had a driver for Mavericks. Further a little web searching lead me to believe that there are not many, if any scanner manufacturers who do support Mavericks - is that possible?

Can Apple has decided that scanning is not an essential service for an OS? It might have been nice to ask first or at least warn us - some of us depend upon our Apple systems for a livelyhood. Has anyone heard any good news about when scanner drivers will be available for Mavericks?

While Apple, usually, includes basic manufacturer printer drivers in OS X, with the shear number of dedicated scanners and all-in-one printer/scanner/copier/fax units, Apple has never included any rea goodl drivers for all of the scanner manufacturers.

If you can't find manufacturer scanner driver updates, have you tried using OS X Image Capture app to see if your scanner is seen by this app?

If, no joy, look to this scanning app called VueScan.

Try using the OS X pre installed Image Capture app in your Applications folder.

Connect the scanner to your Mac whether Wi-Fi or USB.

Launch Image Capture.

Click the very small black box User uploaded file bottom left side of the Image Capture window.

You'll see this pop up menu: Connecting this (device) opens:

You can select a default app to scan (Image Capture) and select a folder from the Imort To pop up menu on the right to save scanned files to.

Thanks everyone but the above suggestions failed to correct the scanning issue. The two scanners are from Xerox and Canon, so my assumption has to be that drivers to support Mavericks from these two manufacturers have not been made available yet - at least as of yesterday.

My point was more generally about releases of new OSs. I seriously doubt Apple or anyone would release a new OS that did not have full printer support; but it appears that the same is not the case for scanner support. That reflects an outdated assumption that scanning is not an essential service. My experience in the last several years is that assumption is incorrect - everyone scans and shares. Well maybe "everyone" is an exageration - I'll just say all those folks I know who use email, Twitter, or Facebook.

Scanning is ESSENTIAL - manufacturers sell us devices that cost more because they include scanning that we reasonably assume will be supported SERIOUSLY, that's how we use it. (Regarding VueScan, should we have to purchase a separate application to use a scanner - would we do that for printing?!)

My Canon MP 750 printer/scanner no longer can scan either.

my cynical view is that i'm being forced to buy a new scanner or printer; surely if I had a new one it would be compatible. But the old one is quite a good unit and I shouldn't have to. Canon has not provided new drivers to match Mavericks, but it works fine on my boyfriend's PC.

I tried all of the differnt options suggested throughout these discussions (reinstall, verify & repair permissions, find new driver (none for scanner), use Image Capture (doesn't see the scanner when I'm connected to it neither does Photoshop).

if someone comes up with another solution I'd like to hear it. Is it Apple's responsibility or the responsiblity of Canon. I'm guessing Apple's mavericks team since it worked previously and also works on my partner's PC. Sigh.

Vuescan is great software for all scanners.

This software is better than what is available from the scanner manufacturers or what is avaibke in OS X Image Capture software.

If you pay for the professional version, you are entitled to unlimited free upgrades of the software.

The software has been regularly updated for years and as is well worth the price.

IMO.
