There is no way to add a text file using QuickTime X.
You can do it using QuickTime Player 7 Pro but it costs twice as much as iMovie.
I movie is $14.99, not too bad.
Otherwise do a search for "free mac editing software". You'll find something to meet your requirements.
VideoPad free should do the trick.
Did your Mac not come with iMovie originally? If so that will still do the job for adding movie style titles over the video. You could even upgrade your Mac to Mavericks (free) and then get an upgrade to the latest iMovie (also free).
(Oops, I now see you are referring to titles for a movie rather than subtitles so ignore what is below if not applicable.)
It is still possible to use QuickTime Player 7 in Snow Leopard (which your signature says you are still running) and even in Mavericks.
Perian supports external subtitle files for use with QuickTime Player 7.
If you want subtitles in QuickTime Player X then Perian no longer works (for Mavericks). The 'proper' way to do subtitles i.e. QuickTime subtitle tracks, requires using a utility to convert them. Have a look at iSubtitle here http://www.bitfield.se/isubtitle/
Another option is to 'burn' the subtitles in to the video but then they cannot be turned off. See http://www.bitfield.se/submerge/index.html

You do not need QuickTime Pro to add text to video - but it is very difficult to find a description how to do it...
You might try to search for something like "{QTtext}" - and you will find many descriptions how to edit and save a text document which describes what you want to see as text. But you must notice that this will only work if you use QuickTime (and not "AV Foundation" which is used on Mavericks aka Mac OS X 10.9).
1.) Create a text based on this description.
2.) Save this as text (extension "txt").
3.) Download and install a software which can create a new movie (we distribute nessViewer - and you can use its demo version for this free of charge if you only need 30 minutes for it, otherwise restart the application for another 30 minutes).
4.) Select "New Movie" in the toolbar - you will get a empty movie document.
5.) Drag & drop your text document onto this empty movie document - you should see your text now in the new movie document.
Now you should have a QuickTime movie with a text track. This movie can be selected and added to another movie.
