Q: AirPlay Extended Display No Sound From TV

When I extend my desktop from my MacBook Pro 15" mid-2012 model to my tv connected via Apple TV, I can move windows to and from either screen no problem, but I cannot get sound to play through the speakers on my tv for some reason. I've tried going into system preferences and manually changing the sound output device from the computer's speakers to the Apple TV, but it will not allow me to select the Apple TV. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had this issue. Has anyone ben able to resolve this?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I'm an idiot too.  It was the volume reset to zero that was the culprit in my case. I only discovered this when I went to Sound in Preferences (after trying the reboot suggestions) because people were saying they couldn't select the appropriate speakers.  My speakers were correctly selected but volume "0".  I now have my speaker output volume displayed on my screen so I can pick up on this earlier.  Thanks Forum.

It might have already been said, sorry if it is. I went into sound on my mac in preferences and found that the sound was at the bottom. I turned this up and sound works fine now (coming out of my TV)! Hope it works for everybody else. (Again sorry if this has been said but I had this question and found it myself :/)

I'm having the problem with no sound as well. It is not resetting my sound to zero though and I am able to select AirPlay for the audio source. I tried the restart as well as turning the Wifi off and on but neither have worked. Any other ideas?

Ok I've restarted my macbook pro, I've restarted the Apple TV, I've unplugged and plugged back in the Apple TV, and I've restarted my wifi. Still no sound. Under system preferences, I'm able to select the Apple TV for sound output, and the volume was at max. Audio still coming out through the laptop. The REALLY frustrating part is that when I dragged the output volume bar to mute and then back to max volume, it made the volume-clicking sound through the TV, not the computer speakers! (You know when you adjust your volume up and down on the mac with the keyboard buttons and it makes that sound louder and louder so you know how loud the volume is? That's what I mean by volume clicking sound. I'm not a tech-smart person )

Please somebody help me before I throw every Apple product I can find into the ocean!

For good measure, here's my volume window.

MBP Retina display (early 2015 model), Mavericks -- turns out that connecting to Apple TV for AirPlay turns the volume on the MBP to mute.  I just had to turn the volume back up on the MBP and voila!  Sound from the Apple TV.

What did it for me (even after a reset, resetting coreaudio in terminal and restarting my MBPro didn't work) was to go into apple tv settings>audio and turn airplay off, and then back on. Then it worked.
