How to input 5.1 Surround Sound on MacBook Pro

Hello.

I have been having trouble inputting Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound through my MacBook Pro. I usually do Surround Tests but fail for a reason...

QuickTime successfully inputs Surround Sound through my way of inputting Dolby Digital through.

ThunderBolt MiniDisplay Port - HDMI - Plasma TV. Then Red and White AV Cables to AUX on Panasonic DVD Home Theatre SA-PT860.

Through my sister's school laptop. Surround Sound works through Windows Media Player.

I tried with VLC and only Left, Centre, Right and LFE work. Surround channels don't.

Can someone please help me to input Dolby Digital through VLC?

I tried other ways. Like Audio MIDI Setup and Locating my HDMI audio profile and only Stereo is selectible. 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1 (rear and centre) are all disabled and greyed out. Is it my TV? or my Mac?

PLEASE HELP ME.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)
