Q: Mac OSX Mavericks 10.9 firewire audio problem on RME Fireface 800, MOTU 828 Mk II and Apogee Duet on late 2013 iMac i7

I just got the late 2013 iMac 3.5GHz Intel Core i7 and all my firewire based audio interfaces do not work properly although I upgraded to the latest drivers. iTunes or Youtube can play for a short and then there are unbrearable digital noises.

Apogee Duet is slightly better that can play for a few minutes. Then it may have short pause or digital noises. I need to reset the "Sample Rate" to other values to get it work again.

MOTU 828 mk II and RME Fireface 800 are having the most serious problems. Alternating the sample rate can sometimes help but often I need to reboot the iMac to get it work again. However, it works for only 1-2 minutes before the digital noises.

These are the software/drivers I installed:

- Apogee Maestro 2 version 2.8.8

- MOTU Universal Audio Installer for Mac OS X version 1.6.58373 (8/20/2013)

- RME version 3.19, firmware 2.77

I connect the fireware through Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire convertor.

These drivers are supposed to work with 10.9 but they don't. Anyone can help or share experience?

These options are not practical for me. You are right to point out that you paid 2500 for a new machine and now all you have are errors. Apple is required to fix this issue.  Peter

Another point is that others are having similar issues without the fusion drive. I would suspect that it is more of a OS issue. Niote above that one person had the same issue and that he had a mac mini. No fusion drives there. Peter

I have exactly the same problem: brand new iMac 21" i5 fusion drive, presonus Studiolive firewire and RME Babyface USB... No problem with my old macbook pro with maverick as well. Woul it be possible to install an older OS until apple has solved the problem? Marco

I agree that Apple should fix the problem and should not have released these machines/OS with issues such as this.  I was just restating workarounds that have been discussed in other forums that folks can try until this problem is fixed by Apple.

This problem is impacting many people's ability to make revenue.  For those, they may not have the time to wait for Apple to fix this issue.  So for those, attempting a workaround may help them until Apple get's their stuff together.

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

any luck getting your Motu 828 Firewire to work?  I have the same setup as you and also have the Motu MidiTimePiece A/V.  I'm totally scared to upgrade to Mavericks.  Apple is notorious for using us as their beta testers instead of actually making sure it works.

Can you roll back to the old OS X?

What a pain/scam I think they are trying to force you to upgrade when you had a system that worked fine?

What's the deal?  Maybe MOTU will release an update or patch to fix this issue with Mavericks.

Until then I'm going to have to avoid Mavericks b/c it will destroy my recording studio!

So i solved the problem so far. The problem is indeed the fusion drive that creates problems with every audio interface, in my case Presonus studiolive and RME Babyface. I installed Maverick on an external USB hard drive, and boot the system from the external drive: no problems. So this is the easiest temporary solution so far.

By the way I will contact apple - my iMac is only 4 weeks old! - and report the problem...

I'm in the same situation and reported the issue to Apple tech support as well.

I have an USB Apogee Duet with the current Apogee Maestro 2.8.8 driver and I get the same issues.  I have a new Late-2013 iMac 27", 3TB Fusion, 32GB RAM.  I just left a bug report on the Apple Feedback page.

I have the exact same issue as you guys. Brand new Imac - 3t fusion drive - i5 3,2ghz - 16g ram - edirol FA101 popping... and I just opened it. I had no issues like this with my late 2008 macbook pro running mountain lion (with a 250 g ssd inside) . I am not ready to try any weird manipulations with the fusion drive since I paid for it. Apple has to fix this issue asap. This is absolutely not professional and not acceptable for such an expensive computer that is supposed to be way reliable than a windows running one... and evenmore when music production is your job and that you ll loose time and money because of apple's lack of expertize. I don't even want to spend hours to explain this issue to their "supposed" experts because I know they will propose me to buy another soundcard ! This is indeed an easy way to solve problems.

    Welcome to the "party" dhengreg...

    MANY interfaces reported not working.

Many theories and temp fixes but nothing conclusive:

    Fusion drive

    Mavericks

    Haswell/Crystalwell

    USB3

    App Nap

Best advice, try the 10.9.2 beta you'll find on this thread:

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5484036?start=0&tstart=0

And definitely go and leave feedback as Eric indicated above.

Hello Biggus ! Indeed I have read some more forum threads and I really hope that the 10.9.2 update will solve the issue.  Thank you for your feedback and let's keep our fingers crossed.
