Installed OS Mavericks on my Macbook Pro (intel core i7) and now Mail hangs nearly every time I try to quit out of it. It simply will not quit. Key commands don't work, the menu bar dropdown doesn't work, and the dock icon doesn't work. I know that I can force quit (and I do), but that's not a solution to the problem. Does anyone know what's going on, or how to fix it?

Yes, i am having this issue too. I can't quit my mail without force quitting. This issue came after I installed mavericks. I applied the new Mail update which mainly fixes gmail issues but didn't help. I don't use gmail.

This seems to be a more global problem; I hoped that installing a new mail client (Airmail) from the App store, it would solve the problem, but this behaves exactly the same. Typically after using another program Mail (and now Airmail) is unresponsive, and I have to force quit to get either back working.
I have the same problem since Lion, Mountain Lion & now Mavericks. Thought Apple solved this issue in Mavericks latest Mac OS, unfortunately no. I still have to Force Quit my mail which is very annoying. This issue is getting worse & more fraquent for me to force quit each & every time I want to shut down my Mac.
I'm not sure whether I should change to 3rd party mail app or just wait for the next update to solve the mail problem.
In the following thread I list actions that others have reported cleared up other Mail problems. I don't know if they will cure the shutdown problem.

I have the same problem on MacBook Pro with German Language setup. !
On my iMac funny enough no issue at all.

I just change the "check for new messages" time in mail preferences (general) from "automatic" to "every minute" and this solved the problem.

I was experiencing this as well. In system preferences under Internet Accounts, I deselected "Notes" for each of my pop3 email accounts and I can now quit mail normally. I'll report back if this problem returns.
Never mind. I just had to force quit mail again. So disappointing!
I've upgraded to 10.9.2 and I still have to force quit mail (v7.2).
It seemed to helped me. I use a macBook Pro.
Removing the icloud account in "system preferences" "internet accounts" solved the issue here.
In the console (when filtering on "mail") there was one error which tried to login with the username: username@mac.com@mac.com
I wasn't able to send any mails, Mail wouldn't quit without Force quit.
