Q: Why is iPhone 5s slowing down Verizon router data speed?

My question is:  Is there a way to know what is taking up so much bandwidth from my router.  Is there a something I should check when I put my phone to sleep to make sure that nothing is running in the background on my iPhone and using up Verizon router's bandwidth?

Background:  I just set up my iPhone 5 on my home network.  Then I went to Google a topic ...  nothing but the "spinning wheel of death"  loading, loading, loading....and maybe, maybe one page would load.

I turned off my iPhone.

Verizon DSL went back to working fine.

I'm not technically savvy.  For what it's worth I've got Voice Roaming ON, Datad Roaming OFF, Intern'l CDMA ON (factory defaults all).

I double clicked on the iPhone start button and ensured that all apps were closed...well, they're closed now and my router is working good.  So maybe that's the answer, just ensure that all apps are closed before phone goes to sleep.

Thank you

Jen

This article about background multitasking may help you:

You're right ... turning off other apps should help a lot.

Sberman, thank you!  That was a very informative KB article.  I turned off some of my newly downloaded aaps using:  Settings/General/Background App Refresh and left only those like Weather and Stocks that I care about.  Not sure if that means I'll never get another issue of Vanity Fair .

Couldn't find Location Services under Settings/Location Services but I can find that on my own.

All in all very good article on how to manage applications and the resulting bandwidth hogging.

    Thank you.

    Glad that helped!

By the way, Location Services is now under Settings > Privacy > Location Services.

When you're ready for your next issue of Vanity Fair, one approach might be to simply open Newsstand and if you don't mind exercising some patience at that time, the new Vanity Fair would download then.

    Enjoy your iPhone!
