Double notifications with Gmail since upgrading to Mavericks

Since I upgraded to Mavericks (10.9), I seem to be having this problem where my emails would be listed twice in Notifications. This only affects my Gmail accounts, and not my iCloud account. I have tried disabling mail notificaitons, reboot and re-enabling notifications without success. I've also recently installed the Mail Updated that's suppose to help with Gmail fix. Still no luck!

Check the App Store if you have not downloaded and installed the latest v10.9 update.

It may help the Gmail issue.

OS X: About Mail Update for Mavericks

At the App Store under Updates you should see: Mail Update for Mavericks Version 1.0

This is also happening but only for one of my gmail accounts I administer weirdly enough. It's annoying - double notifications on screen and in notification center. This has been happening since before the OS X mail update, and is persisting even after a completely fresh installation. Very annoying.

I've gone through settings at Google, no All Mail folder is selected for either of my accounts, and Mail.app preferences are set to show alerts only for new mail in the Inbox. Yet still only one of them gets double/duplicate notifications.

I found the problem. Google recently added an "Important" mailbox/label. For some reason, Google was thinking almost every new email was marked as important and so every time a new email came in, it would appear in the inbox AND in the important folder, hence, two emails would show up under notificaitons.

IDEALLY Apple Mail would be smart enough to recognize that this is a duplicate email. Alas, it is not.

The work around is to disable this mailbox/label. ie. go into Settings -> Labels -> uncheck "Show in IMAP" for the "Important" System Label.

Aw crap. I thought I'd done this already. It appears to have done the trick. Interestingly enough, even checked, this issue doesn't occur on my other account. I guess none of the emails I get there are "important" 😝
