iPod Shuffle recognized as STMP3500

Last night I wanted to connect my 1GB shuffle to a new computer so I downloaded the current software (2006-06-28) and installed it. I connected the shuffle and ran the updater which told me I needed to update the firmware so I did, big mistake. The load failed with a "disk write error" and now my shuffle appears as a STMP3500 (chipset on shuffle) after I plug it in. The updater wants to perform a restore so I tried that, which fails most of the time with the same error but sometimes succeeds and leaves me with a message something like "please wait until the shuffle finishes recovering". I've waited and waited and it still doesn't work. The updater still wants to do a restore and windows still thinks it is a STMP3500. iTunes doesn't recognize so I don't know what to do, any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Fortunetly, I was within the 1 year warranty so I got a new one with a 90 day warranty.
The warranty on replacements is 90 days or the end of the warranty on the original item, whichever is longer.
If you purchased the iPod in January, the warranty for the replacement is good until January.
If you purchased the iPod in July last year, the warranty for the replacement is good until October this year (90 days).

"Apple warrants replacement products or parts provided under this warranty against defects in materials and workmanship from the date of the replacement or repair for ninety (90) days or for the remaining portion of the original product's warranty, whichever provides longer coverage for you."
