cutaway fade one side in imovie 10

Hi

Just started using iMovie and find it to be one annoying software! Anyone knows why, how or if possible to fade only one side of a background? let's say I want to start with a black background which is 'superimposed' or cutaway above the main clip and simply fade it out only at the end of it's duration?
