Nano headphones!!

hey, my headphones for my IPOD have stopped working...well the left headphone is all crackly so i would like to know whether i can get sme new ones from Apple for free? if my IPOD is under warranty or something? and if so how do i check whether it is registered with apple? please help. thankyou
