Macbook with netgear router

Just got a macbook and having a lot of difficulty connecting it to my wlan.

Macbook has 10.4.7 update

Router is a Netgear DG834G with SSID off for security and uses WEP encryption with a 128bit hex value as a key.
The router also runs on channel 5 but i cant see an option to change this anywhere.

To be honest i have no idea about this and it keeps mentioning that there is an error. I just want to get this running asap.

Thanks in advance for the help

It would be of great help to know "what" the error message says.

I can recommend the following steps:

1. Turn ON SSID broadcasting (to debug)
2. Turn OFF security (to debug)
If you still can't connect then perhaps you should try a different router.

Hopefully you can get connected... if so then:
1. Turn ON security, preferably something more than WEP as it is better than nothing but still a poor security implementation. WPA or WPA+2 would be a better choice but this may cause problems with your other computers on your Wireless LAN. Here's a tip. Create your key by entering it in Notepad (another "cool" PC app) then you can transfer this text file to your Mac via a USB memory stick or something (gosh, doesn't everyone have one now?) and then copy and paste it into your configuration. This will eliminate almost all data entry errors which I'd guess are about 90% of configuration problems.
2. Turm OFF SSID broadcasting.

Good luck, hope you get it resolved.

Hi,

I am currently using my MacBook with my Netgear DG834G router, underneath the router, it reads that it is version 2.

Have you tried upgrading the routers firmware to the newest availible - I am currently using V3.01.29, which I think is a beta firmware, but I should say that ADSL performance has been great with this version fo the firmware and I havent been dissconnected for over 4 days.

Have you tried doing a hardware reset of the router? there is a small hole ont he back of the router between port 1 and the phone socket, which if you poke something inside and then hold for 5 seconds or so it will reset the router.

I am currently using WPA-PSK to secure my wireless network.

I would suggest doing a hardware reset and then trying to access the router without security enabled, and then playing with security after that.

oh and just a final word if you're updating the firmware (although perhaps obvious) I wouldn't advise doing so wirelessly - I did this once and the firmware corrupt....

Hope that helps - at least you know that the two are indeed compatible.

Andrew
