Nov 10, 2013 7:58 AM in response to Hashim Jamalby EZ Jim,(1) Restart Mac, repair permissions, then download and install OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.5 (Combo) (although you have already updated.)
Repair permissions again immediately following the restart that completes the Combo update.
Test camera function. If you encounter a problem with third-party software like Skype, test more than one Apple camera app in more than one user account.
(2) If your problem continues, use OS X Recovery to reinstall Mac OS X Mountain Lion.
Then use  > Software Update… to verify that all your Apple software is up to date. Install any needed updates and repair permissions one more time.

The only way to know if your problem will be resolved is to try what I recommended.
I listed the simplest things first. If repeating the combo Update does not work. try troubleshooting iSight with more than one Apple camera app in more than one user account. If that doesn't work either, reinstall OS X.

Perhaps I misunderstand. Apple calls OS X 10.8.5 "Mountain Lion". They call OS X 10.9 "Mavericks".
If you are now using Mac OS X 10.9 instead of 10.8.5, and if you have tried everything previously suggested here but your problem remains, follow Apple's instructions to Reinstall OS X Mavericks.
Then try your camera again using the method suggested in How to Troubleshoot iSight. (Over time, Apple has changed the built-in camera's name on newer Macs from "iSight" to "FaceTime" and then to "FaceTime HD." Regardless of the name of your Mac's built-in camera, the same troubleshooting method and remedies apply.)

Use the final "Troubleshooting" suggestion:
"... contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service."
Hashim Jamal wrote:... i took my laptop to a apple authorised service department...
You did the right thing.

If you like the Mac you have and need the built-in camera, spend the money.
If you want a different computer, now is a good time to trade.
If cost is a concern, consider a Mac compatible external camera. Take your MacBook Air to the store when you shop, and try the external camera you want to be certain that it works before you buy.

Nov 20, 2013 12:32 PM in response to EZ Jimby milkthebasic,I have exactly the same issue. Since the updated my camera does not work anymore and is not detected in Utilities -> System information.
This also happened to me previously a few months ago and then after about 3 months with no camera it suddenly started working again. I can't remember if it was due to an update or not, but everyone was telling me it was hardware related, which is absolutely not the case. Now again after this software update my camera has stopped working. I guess we'll have to keep addressing the issue to apple and hopefully this SOFTWARE issue will be resolved soon.

Jun 14, 2014 10:05 PM in response to jacks2014by mrule2,Thank you jacks2014, that seems to fix it.
I have an older (2009?) macbook, which I upgraded to mavericks because the original operating system was no longer supported. The first time using the camera after the upgrade seems to have failed, but the hard-reset restored it.
