iPad 3 - No sound from speakers, but headphones work fine

Hi

Yesterday my ipad's sound abruptly stopped. I was playing something on youtube and suddenly the sound just wasnt there. The button clicks, SIRI etc too did not have any sound coming from speakers. However when I connected a 3.5mm jack headphone, it worked just fine, and i can hear sound via headphones.

I tried googling and resetting settings and then doing to full facotry reset but nothing worked.

Its an ipad 3 around 1 year 2 months old. Any advice to fix this problem is appreciated

Has anyone else had this problem recently?

thanks

If you don't have sound using Siri, perhaps you have system sounds muted.

System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.

Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.

If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.

If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.

If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.

This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

If that's not the problem either and you still have no sound, try cleaning the dock connector opening of the iPad with a soft brush - like a toothbrush - and use just a little bit of rubbing alcohol, if you have some in the house. If not, just try the soft brush.

Do you have any sounds at all? Can you hear music when you play songs in the music app? Do you hear keyboard clicks?

Do you use a dock with your iPad? Do you AirPlay with Bluetooth Speakers? If you use a dock, try connecting and removing the iPad a few times. You can also try inserting and removing the earbuds a few times.

@Demo - Thanks for your reply. I dont get any sound from ipad speakers. No music when i play songs, no keyboard clicks, nothing. I however get sound from my headphones when i use them (headphones) via the 3.5 mm jack. Once they are plugged in i hear everything (not from the speakers but from the headphones.)

No i dont dock my ipad, and dont Airplay with bluetooth speakers.

@CarlosDominique - "System restore from iTunes"? Do you mean factory settings reset? I have done that, but not from itunes (dont know how to do it from itunes).

If you mean backup restore, then i m yet to do it. But my latest backup was created when i had this problem so i am not sure if that is useful, but i can still give it a go.

thanks

Ohh well.. did not do it. Instead went to the apple store, explained what has happened. My ipad was 15 months (so 3 months out of 1 year Apple warranty). They said they cant do anything and i will have to pay for the repair. I argued that a premium product should have more life than 15 months and it was just illogical for me to fork out money again to get it repaired. The genius bar guy went to talk to the manager and they exchanged my old ipad for a new one. I asked him if it was a new or refurbished. He said it was new but somehow they call it PART to differentiate it from the real NEW. However the warranty on that is 90 days, so i assume it was a refurb anyways.

thanks for all your help. i will be back to this forum in 90 days time 🙂

Have the same problem with mine. I just called apple and they wanted me to purchase a $20 support ticket just to talk to someone on the phone. I said no and chose to speak to an operator instead. The operator stated that there was nothing that they could do because my 3rd gen was out of warranty. They stated that it would cost $299.00 to get it fixed.

We chose apple a long time ago as our platform to download movies and music rather than having multiple platforms in the house. My family has spent untold thousands of dollars on apple products (IPHONES, IPADS, etc) in the past, but no more. We will be choosing a new platform from this point forward. I'm due for a phone upgrade right now and was not even thinking about changing brands (no time better than the present). They had product loyalty, but no more.

I had a similar wonderful experience at the Apple store. Had an appt. at 2:30 PM and waited 45 minutes after being seated for consultation before anyone met with me. I had already tried all the reset options to fix the iPad3 speakers, which had stopped working after the 7.0 software update. The apple store employee pretty much did everything I had already done to try and "fix" it and then offered me a replacement for $299 as it was out of warranty. I did not accept the offer.

I pointed out on a webpage how many other people had this same problem after the software update. The employee, and even the store manager agreed that it was "very possible" that the software update caused a malfunction in the speakers, but they cannot replace it as it was out of warranty. I was dumbfounded. "Apple's" software update caused the malfunction on the "Apple" product, yet the consumer should suck it up and replace it with a new "Apple" product. Needless to say, I was very disappointed in the outcome.

I too have spent thousands over the years on apple products for myself and my family (5 iPads, numerous iPhones and iPods). I have since purchased a Windows Surface and, although taking a little getting used to after years of iPad, I am enjoying it. My iPhone 5 will be replaced with either the Samsung Galaxy 4, HTC One, or LG G2...haven't quite decided, still doing research. Nothing wrong with the iPhone but I’m replacing it out of principle.

I am having the same exact issue. Since the upgrade, my sound isn't working except for through headphones. Is someone from Apple monitering this blog and seeing how many people have the same issue. I went to the local Genius Bar and they seem stumped by this too. I'm out of warranty and out of luck according to them... all because I downloaded the upgrade as Apple recommended. Furious!

I solved the same problem with the "Restore from backup" option from iTunes.

You can make a full backup and then use this option.

It seems to me like a problem with some software with the update, and the Restore from Backup function installs a fresh system software and restore all your content.

Please make sure you have checked all the needed options related to iBooks and other content so you don't loose anithing on the process.

Hope this helps. This solved my issue with two iPads (mine and my wife one) after visiting the Apple Store without success to solve it.

Device: ipad 3 wifi and 3g

OS: 7.1.1 (updated to the latest)

Bluetooth Device: none

airplay: none

sim: none

No Sound (within the last 10 days)

installed latest updates

sound falls off without any specific trigger

volume slider in control center (when swiping from bottom of screen) is gone

tried reboot several times (hold HOME and POWER until APPLE logo appears) - problem persists

Side switch (above volume) set to rotation lock - tried on mute - problem persists

Tried Siri ("Sound" reply with audio and for some reason can adjust volume again but closing siri and issue back) - audio is good

Tried youtube - no sound

All Apps up to date

Changed language to different one and back again 3 days ago - ISSUE SOLVED

Next day Issue back - Tried fix - ISSUE SOLVED AGAIN

Following Day - All used languages previously are not displaying volume slider in control center

Tried changing to new languages (other than what's been used) - volume slider present

while in a different language tried all apps - all are with sound 🙂 (now if I can only understand Chinese,Japanese, Eastern European Languages... lol)

CONCLUSION: BUG!!!

Solution: Bug Fix (Just updated to latest updates today hoping issue will be sorted out... 😟)

Commentary: If you're told to buy new apple products because of such issues when clearly this is a bug it is

1. person you're talking to doesn't have a clue ( Scenario: I have an issue with my computer and immediate response is try to reformat your hdd)

2. Sales quota for month and/or quarter not yet met

3. Latest notice for os update was yesterday so next one will be in a day?week?month?
