Airplay mirroring screen size (iPhone vs iPad)

I'm not sure if this has been answered yet or not. Just got the iPad air, I also have iPhone 5 and Apple TV 3rd gen. Previously I was using my iPhone to watch some shows on my tv, mainly Showtime shows through my Directv app (showtime app doesn't support any airplay function but that's another issue) with the mirroring functionality. When I was using my iPhone it would fill the screen of my tv but now when I use my iPad it doesn't, has the 2 bars on the side. Is there a way to fix this. Or just stuck with either having to use phone or deal with the side bars.

Welcome to the Apple Community.

Mirroring won't fill the TV screen. The iPad has an aspect ratio of 4:3 and the iPhone 4S or prior an aspect ratio of 3:2, neither of these will fit exactly into a TV screen which as an aspect ratio of 16:9. The Apple TV will not zoom the mirrored image, because it may well cut off information which is situated at the top or bottom of the screen.

You may wish to try each of the settings in ‘Settings > Audio & Video > Adjust for AirPlay overscan’ for the best setting that suits you.
