I connected it to itunes and it said i had to reset it so i hit ok and then it said it was downloading the stufff but all sudden itr said seriaal number N/A then it said waiting for phone and its been doing that now for bout hour and half can anyone tell me what it might be or what i can possibly do to fix this

It will do that during the restore process. It extracts the software which makes the iPhone look like it cannot read the Serial number. Its normal. I would let it continue until you get an error message and go from there.

It definitely depends on internet connection, how much data you're syncing or trying to restore from, etc.
