Finder is stalled

Good morning everyone,

During the weekend that I was away from home, a friend used my Mac while I was away and according to what he told me, he was clicking around until he opened a file and the finder was frozen. He could not turn off the mac trough OS X so he turned off the computer by pressing the on/off button.

Now that I have returned I am trying to use my Mac and for my surprise, I see that the finder is stalled. My computer starts normally, but the desktop will not show up my hard drive volume or my cd/dvd's.

At first, I thought it was an issue with the Hard Drive, but then I realized that the rest of the applications were working well (except for some webpages when using Safari), that is when I noticed that only the finder whas the only one that was not working properly.

I already verified permissions and repaired permissions using disk utility (I am accesing my applications trough the spotlight), but still finder would not launch properly.

I tried to reboot from the install dvd using the c key, but my computer would not reboot!!, it will stay on the gray screen with the apple icon forever.

I already deleted the apple.com.plist files that save the pereferences and it would still not work. The only thing that happened differently was that the desktop returned to the original Mac picture.

The Combo 10.4.6 installer would not work on the Mac due that I already have the 10.4.7 version of Mac OS X.

I get the feeling that my friend was trying to do something with the iDisk and that is when the computer frozen.

Can someone help me out with this??

Thanks,

iMAC G5, Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Have you tried installing the 10.4.7 Combo Updater? It will overwrite any damages or missing files.

If you can't boot using your OS X install disc, then I'd do this, then reboot and run Repair Permissions and see if the problems are resolved.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions,

I have tried also the new account and it did not work.

The preferences menu on the finder is shown, but when I click on it nothing happens...I guess is because the Finder is not running correctly.

I will try to install the Combo Update later today to see if it works.

Thanks a lot for your sugestions.

Regards,

Amaury
