Why can't I get Pages, etc. for free on my new iMac?

I have just (10th November) bought a new iMac. It had Mountain Lion Installed. I have upgraded to Mavericks but Pages, Numbers and Keynote are still showing as £13.99 each. I should get these for free. How do I do that?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

If you just bought a new iMac, how is it that it had Mountain Lion installed?

Why does that matter? The machines are manufactured with the current OS up until and/or shortly after a new OS is launched. There is a period where the old OS may be installed for about a month. That is actually beneficial: if, for instance, you have third party sotware that will not run under Mavericks, you can stay with ML and boot from either system until that software is updated. I've always made sure I get a machine that can be booted from more than one OS.

Well all new MBPr, which were released at the same time along with the new iMac's and Mavericks, do come with Mavericks pre-installed.

Apple just made a mistake in loading Mt Lion on the new iMac's.

It matter for 2 reasons.

1) Now when that iMac is sold or given to someone the original owner has to load Mt Lion back on it.

2) For the owners of those brand new iMac computer they have to go through the time and trouble of upgrading it to Mavericks and Maverick will then be Tied to their Apple ID.

Agreed. However, I still prefer a machine that can boot from more than one OS.

As far as I know, it will be tied to your Apple ID anyway. The only way to "untie" it will be to use internet recovery (installing without being tethered) and un-registering the machine at Apple.

No when a Mac comes with OS X version X, Y or Z that version is tied to the Machine and not to any Apple ID. That version can be reinstalled on that Mac as many time as you like and you never have to type is an Apple ID or the password for an Apple ID.

Once it is upgrade to a newer version of OS X that version is tied to the Apple ID of the person that logged onto the Mac App Store and downloaded that newer version.

What gets me is that even though Mavericks is FREE for anyone that have SL to Mt Lion it is still tied to one persons Apple ID and can't legally be transferred to anyone else.

No the OP was not sold an older iMac. Currently all of the newest iMac's available have Mt Lion Pre-Installed.

To check the model year of any Mac go to the Apple Logo in the menu bar and select About This Mac then click the More Info button and you will get a windows like this.

User uploaded file

That lists the model year.

The exact same issue occured with me and when I contacted the retailer they told me to bring it back in and traded it for the newest with 802.11ac for the faster speed through your Airport Extreme. This newer machine is smoother and faster and is the latest up to datest. You were sold an older machine. A year older machine.
