Windows Stuck In Akward Positions After Maverick Update

It started with Firefox: when I start it up or open a new window, the windows are collapsed as small as they can be, with the window positioned with the top left corner slightly off screen so I can't get at the round colored window buttons, and when I try to move the window anywhere else, it pops back into position. Now it's happening in iPhoto too. I open the iPhoto preferences pane, and it's stuck up there in that akward position, and I can't get it to move anywhere else without it popping back up there. Sometimes it does it, sometimes it doesn't. I haven't changed anything or installed any apps or utilities, only the Maverick update.

MacBook, OS X Mavericks (10.9), 4GB ram

Similar problems here! I'm on a core2duo iMac that has never failed in 4 years. I use it with multiple users and I use th winows switching feature a lot. I decided Mavericks could probably be it's final upgrade. Now I find windows randomly collapsed, especially those from firefox. Often they are shrunk in the horizontal direction and positioned in awkward positions, at the edges of the screen. I simultaneously suffer from the scrolling bug. It is really really REALLY annoying!!!

I have never been so dissappointed in a system upgrade in my 20+ years of mac experience and even was a a happy floppy disk changer in the days of the MacPlus :-)

10.9.1 has not improved things a bit. What is apple doing here?

Jan 17, 2014 4:06 AM in response to sheila_m.

Dear Sheila M.,

I think this forum posts are quite explanatory for this issue. I also think that from the described in this thread and others, this issue is obviously a bug on Mavericks. Do we have an agreement on these two?

So, giving the amount of people involved and suffering with the issue, and also that you are the Apple support technician assigned to this thread, can you please give us some feedback on when it is expectable to have this issue resolved?

Kind regards,

Pedro

Hi everyone on this thread,

I just want to add my voice to this discussion as I am having the same issue, windows collapsing to the upper left corner after the display goes to sleep. The windows dont resize, just reposition. For me this happens with many apps, most notably Adobe Lightroom. Will try the suggested dock fix.

Configuration: MacPro 2010 - 16GB RAM -single monitor

Yes this is very annoying and a prompt solution would be VERY appreciated.

regards,

Anton

One of the folks in this string suggested eliminating the auto sleep function as a way to avoid this problem. I've been doing that for the last couple of weeks, and I have had no recurrence of the problem. No leaping windows to the upper left, or other strange alignments.

Of course, that means I must manually order the machine to go into sleep mode if that's what I want, but that's no big deal, and as a temporary fix, this seems to work.

I operate a Mac Mini late 2013 version.

Jan 28, 2014 5:18 PM in response to Readmore

this problem happened to me again today - but it's the first time I've seen it since 12/25.

as is typical, this time I only had Safari, Excel and Finder running, and I set the the login screen using fast user switching before I logged back in later in the day to find my frontmost 2 Safari windows shrunk to narrow horizontal shape and stuck off the top left and inaccessible. As usual, switching the dock position un-sticks these windows.

I already have my Energy Savings setting to Never sleep the computer, so in my case this problem is NOT being caused by the computer going to sleep. I do however have the display set to sleep after 15 min.

it's strange that this doesn't happen every time though, weeks have gone by since the last time so I have no idea what's the real trigger

p.s. this is on an iMac 2.8GHz Core i7, Mac OS X 10.9.1

Jan 29, 2014 3:41 AM in response to alphabc

I can confirm the same. It's not 'sleep' that triggers this.

I have managed to re-create the issue randomly by returning to the 'Login Window' using the fast user switching menu (top-right-hand corner). But it is inconsistent.

I also have my imac set to never-sleep, and power off monitor after 5 mins.

You'd have though we'd have heard something back from Apple about this problem by now... seems to be affecting enough people. :-/

If there is an Apple Support operative monitoring this issue, perhaps you could advise what further information you would like us to provide in order to help resolve this defect?

Feb 8, 2014 10:46 AM in response to dsinacola

Same issue, I think.

My core i7 mini w 10.9.1 with a single display.

It put the display to sleep per energy saver prefs.

Returned to my system.

Woke it by tapping a key on the keyboard.

Openoffice is still open, but its two open documents, which each were full screen, are nowhere to be seen.

When I go to Mission Control there are two collapsed window bars off screen to the top and left.

I can't move them lower. Can't double click them.

Can't seem to get them back to the foreground.

This has never been an issue before.

Just recently upgraded to mavericks. Have had the system for over a year. The display for 5years. Used OpenOffice for years.

Here's console:

The easiest work around for this bug that I have found is to right-click the Dock icon of the offending app, and select "Show All Windows". When you then click on the window that is stuck, it'll unstick, and appear in some arbitrary spot on the screen. It does retain it's small window size, but that's a matter of clicking the green button or manually resizing.

Feb 18, 2014 6:43 AM in response to dsinacola

Found another thread that had a solution I am trying.

http://forums.macnn.com/90/mac-os-x/302186/help-with-window-stuck-in-corner/

~/Library/Preferences

- Closed application

- Found the plist file for the offending application and deleted it.

- Relaunched application

So far so good, but that doesn't say much since it only happens randomly after the screen locks.
