I can't Bold text in Pages

I can get neither the command + B shortcut, the format "B" button, nor the list-select to allow me to bold my text. I am using Pages v5 from the new Mavericks update.

Before you answer, note I am aware some fonts do not have the option to bold; however, I am using "Times New Roman," which should have this capability.

Honestly, I could live without the Bold button or list-select, but I would like to be able to use the shortcut again (it's the fastest for note-taking in school).

Any help?

Yes it is forcing people to stop what they are typing, select some text and change it, then do the same thing all over again when they want to change back.

Whether Apple considers this a bug or part of their overall program to make sure that no-one on the Mac can get their work done, is up to your interpretation.

At the rate Apple is improving Pages and the Mac I'll be back to scratching out my work on a plank with a rusty nail, or more likely I will be shifting my work to somewhere more productive.

If you had Pages '09 on your Mac you can go back to it in your Applications/iWork folder.

PS Apple published a list of things they were going to fix in the next 6 months. It was a short list and did not include this so I guess you will still be waiting at and admiring the breakneck pace of improvement. A bit over 1 per month!

I don't have a system running Mavericks to test on, but other users have reported that they can toggle bold and underline as long as they type a single character (space) so that the insertion point is not at the beginning of a new paragraph. Your experience would seem to indicate that the situation is more complicated, but I don't think you have stated explicitly that you have tried it with the insertion point in the middle of a paragraph.

This is a weird bug, perhaps. I can start a new paragraph and before I type anything, hit Command B and it will go either bold or regular. Italics works fine, too. I'm not needing to enter a space. Tried it both with a blank layout and a template.

But so sorry for everyone experiencing the frustration of the new and improved Pages. So far, the only thing I use Pages 5.0 for is to try and help people with problems. Best advice I got, and can give, is to stick with 4.3.

Thanks Peter! I have 2 follow up questions:

1. Does this mean that I have to type, and then highlight what I have just typed to bc able to bold the text? I presume so, since that is what it sounds like, but I wanted to make sure I was understanding.

2. Is this something that Apple generally recognizes as a bug and fixes (hopefully promptly)? I'm not new to Apple or Pages, but I am new to Pages on MacBook Air (as opposed to iPad2), which explains my lack of knowledge on the "recification" sebject...
