Sounds like you want to turn off Automatic Downloads. The following Knowledge Base article shows how to turn the feature on but you can also turn it off:

Enabling Automatic Downloads on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

1. Tap Settings > iTunes & App Stores on your device.
2. Tap Sign In if you're not already signed in to the iTunes Store.
3. Enter your Apple ID and password.
4. Tap to enable or disable Automatic Downloads for each content type.
