Boot problem with Samsung 840 EVO

Hi,

I've recent installed a new Samsung SSD 840 EVO into my MacBookPro 5,5 (late 2009).

During normal usage all works fine, but sometimes during system startup I notice a gray screen with an image like "access denied" symbol, and the startup take "a lot of time" (about a minute, instead of 20 second)

What's happen? Can be a disk failure? SMART data seems OK and also Disk Repair.

Someone can help me?

Thank you in advance

Bye

Marco

I bought a SSD 840 EVO 250GB for my MacBook Pro (mid 2009).

I've a problem during system boot: often after power on I see below image, but after 20-30 second the system boot regular and then all goes fine.

This is my configuration:

-MacBookPro5,5 - (EFI 1.7)

-Mavericks 1.9.1

-SSD 840 EVO (MZ-7TE250) Firmware EXT0BB6Q

The SSD is istalled internal and configured as boot disk.

Seems like if the SSD is not ready at the bootstrap time...

For the moment I solved the problem downgrading my MacBook Pro EFI to version 1.6 (source: http://ixdc.net/blog/tag/efi/).

The boot problem is gone, unfortunately, EFI 1.6 limits data transfers to 1.5 Gigabit :-(

Hope this helps!

This type of information is distressing... when the EVO series first came out the price was so good and the drives so fast that I couldn't help but get excited and include them in my user tip regarding SSDs in MacBook Pros (which is due for a total revision). But, early on, there were a number of people having problems with their MBPs and EVO drives. That seemed to level off for awhile but it seems that for everyone successfully running an EVO there's another user having problems.

In the end I, personally, bought a Crucial 960GB M500 and I've been more than pleased with the performance. But I really wish I could begin recommending EVOs... but having to run at 1.5Gbps? That's just unacceptable to me.

Let us know if you find a way to get your drive up to speed, so to speak.

The warranty is three years. The problem is that with a PC with Windows disk works perfectly, and even with the newer MacBook, so it is not defective disc, but a problem with the Apple EFI 1.7 with which has enabled the transfer to 3.0 Gigabit but does not guarantee it.

"MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.7 addresses an issue reported by a small number of customers using drives based on the SATA 3Gbps specification with the June 2009 MacBook Pro. While this update allows drives to use transfer rates greater than 1.5Gbps, Apple has not qualified or offered these drives for Mac notebooks and their use is unsupported."
