Q: Sleep/wake crash OSX Mavericks, Macbook Air 2013

Hi there,

Since the upgrade to Mavericks my 2013 Macbook Air had a few sleep wake crashes. The problem occurs when my air turns to sleep, and I try to wake it with the keyboard within a very short time.(1-3 seconds I think) Happened a few times when I was typing and accidently pressed the on/off button while typing(which is a really stupid feature in the new OSX if you ask me) and a few times when I tried to safe my laptop from going to sleep because it was idle for to long, and just got there to late. What happens is that the Macbook just gives a black screen, but is still on. I cant let it sleep by closing the lid, and the only way to get it running again is by restarting.(holding down the on/off button)

Couldnt find anything similar to this. So i'm hoping if this is a common problem with Mavericks and is on the list to be fixed with the new patch.

I hope you guys have some info.

I also have this problem, running a 2013 MBA. Definitely a problem with OSX Mavericks 10.9. I'm willing to bet that everyone with Mavericks has this problem, but only some notice it as it requires a combination of having the computer go to sleep and pressing on the keyboard/touchpad.

I can re-create this by pressing the power button to put the laptop to sleep and immediately clicking on the touchpad. I get a black screen (but the LCD remains on, since the apple logo on the outside of the laptop stays lit). Nothing can get me out of this other than doing a hard reset of the laptop. Very annoying and needs to get fixed in the next update.

I would love to downgrade to 10.8 Mountain Lion, but Apple Care won't help me and says "it's against their policy to downgrade OS versions"... reallly? Now that's just sad. Unfortunatly, my laptop got shipped w/ 10.9 preinstalled so there is no way I can manually return to 10.8 because the recovery on the computer is set for 10.9.

Is anyone here a registered developer and has downloaded the 10.9.2 beta? I would be interested to know if this sleep/wake crash is fixed.

I am also having this issue with my Macbook (purchased fall 2012) just upgraded to Mavericks about a month ago, thinking all the bugs were fixed after initial release. I am considering powering off instead of letting mac go to sleep until and update appears. I was thinking it was my laptop and not the OS. Please hurry with an update, as i just upgraded on my work desktop, and there was lots of weirdness happening with that as well. i.e., preview app is slow to load an image when it is selected and spacebar is pressed. Arghhhhhhhh!!!#$@5#261

For anyone interested, there is another large thread on this same problem.

I spoke to Apple Support two days ago with this problem. The advisor assured me that Apple was well aware of the problem and that they are still working on it. He just told me to move my sleep time up. He then said that was all Apple was giving him and that they provided no further instructions on what was causing the problem. He stated that the next update should fix this problem and to call back if it occurs again after moving the sleep timer up. The black screen of death has not occurred again yet but I'm sure it will.

This bug also occurs on my MacPro. This computer was rock solid under 10.8 & 10.6, but crashes on wake up in 10.9. There is also a delay when I put the computer to sleep.

    Filip,

Same here on the Pro. The problem appears to have nothing to do with the MBA directly, it just seems to have a higher occurance of machines that suffer from it. That makes sense since closing the lid can bring the problem on immediately.

I will repeat what I mentioned way back in this thread in case it helps you. I set Energy Saver-> Computer Sleep to Never, unchecked Put hard disks to sleep when possible, and unchecked Wake for network access. Then I set the Display sleep to 1 hr. Have not had one occurrence of the problem since. I just have to sleep manually when I go somewhere or at night. This works great on the Pro and Mini. Someone tried it on the MBA and it didn't help.

I doubt it has any bearing, but I also let the screen saver pop up after 20 minutes.

I will repeat another thing I said earlier for new arrivals to the thread. Mac Minis also exhibit the same problem, MBPs and iMacs are reported to do the same also as witnessed in the other monster threads on this same topic.

It has been said a few times before in this discussion but worth saying again -

PLEASE REPORT YOUR SLEEP/WAKE ISSUES TO APPLE

Chatting on a community like this is great for sharing experience and getting a bit of help... but this one is clearly a bug (or several similar bugs) hurting a lot of people (over 24,000 views of this discussion at the time of writing).

Apple may be aware of this discussion, but it is not their feedback site and it is not their bug reporting site.

Having a moan here is fine, but take the time to report it properly and we may get a fix...

This is the feedback site: http://www.apple.com/feedback/

A bit more effort, but not much, is the bug reporting site for registered developers.  It is free to register and all you need do is report this bug... you don't ever need to use it again if you don't want to.

This is the bug reporting site: https://developer.apple.com/bug-reporting/
